Historia
Dave Robicheaux has spent his life confronting the age-old adage that the sins of the father pass on to the son. But what was his mother's legacy? Dead to him since his youth, Mae Guillory has been shuttered away in the deep recesses of Robicheaux's mind. While helping out an old friend, Dave is stunned when a pimp looks at him sideways and asks if he is the son of Mae Guillory, the whore a bunch of cops murdered 30 years ago. Her body was dumped in the bayou bordering Purple Cane Road, and the cops who left her there are still on the job.

Good Story. Poor Narration
Revisado: 04-07-18
Would you consider the audio edition of Purple Cane Road to be better than the print version?
No.
What didn’t you like about Nick Sullivan’s performance?
If you're going to imitate a regional accent, at least get someone with that accent to coach you or review your final product. Way to many instances of repeatedly mispronouncing local words, places and names and also of pronouncing common words the way they are spelled rather than the way they are pronounced by the vast majority of people. Sullivan appeared to at times get confused between a Cajun accent and Jamaican, maybe only spending time in New Orleans (with many accents; very few of which resemble the rest of south La.) rather than true Cajun country. Also, he would use a thick accent for a character in one sentence, then no accent at all for that same character a few sentences later - a definite sign of either laziness or complete lack of review by anyone editing the recording.
Any additional comments?
Aside from a couple of very minor technical inconsistencies, story was good enough to overcome the previously-mentioned narration shortfalls.

A collection of 17 wonderful short stories showing that two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks is as talented a writer as he is an actor. The short stories are surprising, intelligent, heartwarming, and, for the millions and millions of Tom Hanks fans, an absolute must-have!

Didn't meet my expectations for Tom Hanks
Revisado: 01-07-18
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Hanks' performance seemed to vary by story - sometimes good, frequently sounding disinterested and sometimes even sounding like it was his first time reading the story.
Any additional comments?
I'm a big fan of Tom Hanks movies and generally thought every thing he touched was gold (even his involvement w/the WWII museum in N.O.). This book and the narration did not meet those expectations. Like the narration, the quality varied by story. Some of the stories were interesting and helped me pass time on several long drives. However, there were several misses. I will probably move on to another book before finishing this one.

Historia
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

Should be required reading
Revisado: 06-12-11
Excellent book. This was my first Sowell book and I will definitely be reading more of his works. Unique, objective way to look at the fundamental differences between core visions that helps explain the polarization of political and social philosophies throughout the ages. I think this book will be as relevant a hundred years from now as it is today. This book should be required reading for anyone to be able to vote.
Only problem with the audio version might be that it made me think so much as I was listening that I frequently lost focus on listening and was constantly rewinding. Made it through the audio version and am now reading a hard copy to see what I missed.

Historia
For a man who insisted that life on the public stage was not what he had in mind, Thomas Jefferson certainly spent a great deal of time in the spotlight, even in his retirement. In American Sphinx, Ellis sifts the facts from the legend to find the heart of the man who, at the grass roots, is no longer liberal or conservative, agrarian or industrialist, pro- or anti-slavery, privileged or populist.

Badly Scratched Record
Revisado: 11-09-10
Literally hundreds of "skips" throughout the entire recording, usually occurring every 1 or two minutes. I should have paid attention to prior reviews. Based on the fact that this recording is still available after those reviews, there is obviously no quality control from either audible.com or Blackstone. Save your credit until this is replaced with an updated version.

Good, but a lot of filler
Revisado: 10-23-10
It seems that the publisher pushed for this to be a certain minimum length. The first four and half chapters are filled with repetition and often seemed like an info-mercial - filled with teasers about what they were going to tell you later, but very little real insight. These chapters could have easily been condensed into one introduction section, maybe 15 minutes max.
Beginning near the end of Chapter 5, the content became useful and I gained more insight than I had on a different voice training cd I listened to years ago.
