Most English history novels put me to sleep so I was a little apprehensive about taking a chance on this book. Am I glad I followed my whim! I literally fell in love with all the leading characters and the novel has inspired me to look into other medieval dramas. The writer and the narrator are both outstanding and deserving of a standing ovation for this fabulous piece of fact woven fiction. Definitely one of the best 5 novels I've chosen from Audible. Highly recommend for both serious and entertainment readers!

She rules from behind the veil, securing her status by forming a junta of sorts with her father, brother, and stepson and by risking all, even her daughter, to get what she wants. But she never loses the love of the man who has bestowed this power upon her.

Another magnificent masterpiece created by Indu Sundaresan with outstanding narration that I loved from beginning to end. The writer's creative technique and the narrator's superb presentation brings ancient India to the 21st century for both history buffs and those not so historically inclined. Every character and event is vividly depicted with grand literary performance and dialogue. The Twentieth Wife is a must read in order to grasp the potency and familiarity with all the amazing characters, and unlike most novel sequels, The Feast of the Roses will not disappoint! Sundaresan certainly raised the bar with these outstanding works of sheer enjoyment so its going to be pretty hard for me to find another author that comes close to measuring up!

This is by far the very best book I have ever received through Audible and I almost passed it up because ancient history bores me to tears. The sample lured me in, and I'm glad I took a chance on this little gem. Both the writer and narrator have transformed the history of ancient India into a fictional masterpiece that really appeals to modern readers. This isn't your ordinary read it and enjoy it once kind of book. The entire story is a captivating production of greed, envy, defiance, lust and romance surrounding the larger than life characters. What's more, the amazing narrator delivers an award winning presentation in driving every character to the core of vivid imagination. Definitely a treasure I'll be enjoying again!

Worst Recording Ever
Revisado: 04-22-07
The previous reviews on this recording are much too polite. This is worst recording I have ever heard, and I can't believe anyone would offer this for public sale. Offensive swallowing is just a fraction of the problem. From beginning to end, the recording sounds like the narrator is struggling to breathe at every sentence and then taking deep inhalations from an oxygen mask every few words. I was even more offended by the narrator's disruptive and endless smacking and struggle for salivation from what sounds like untreated severe dry mouth. It is a constant throughout the recording and so severe that the entire manuscript is ruined.

One of the Best

This was an excellent listen and perfectly scripted novel into the history of Chinese women's culture. I have read many Asian novels both fiction and non fiction about the evolution of Asian history and tradtions, and this poignant manuscript is by far one of the very best. Both writer and narrator deliver a 5 star performance, and I will definitely be referring many others to read it.

Historia
Set in contemporary San Francisco and in a Chinese village where Peking Man is being unearthed, The Bonesetter's Daughter is an excavation of the human spirit: the past, its deepest wounds, its most profound hopes. Tan, author of The Joy Luck Club, brilliantly presents "storytelling in its oldest and truest form".

Revisado: 04-18-07
I have read many Asian inspired novels, and this one hardly measures up to the standard I'm accustomed to receiving. Since Joy Luck Club, I have not been attracted to Amy Tan's writings because they seem to end up the same way...old world meets new world. I thought this one might be different based on the story line, and although I liked a few of the characters, it ended up the same as the others - present day back to the past and back to the present again. The bone collecting portions of the narration are a little confusing at times, and I didn't have the patience with the writer who appears to assume the audience is constantly up to speed on this kind of tradition. Needless to say, the listen didn't keep me captivated enough to want to go back and review some of the puzzling rituals for clarity. There are much better books available for the money.

This is one of those stories that words cannot define. From the literary excellence to the narration, the novel will capture the listener from beginning to end. It taps on all the emotions one would expect from an exceptional masterpiece while embracing the listener in the lives of its fabulous characters. Despite its fiction story line, the writing consistently flows in harmony with Asian history and culture and is written in such a way that gives credibility to the entire novel. Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Best Read for 2007
Revisado: 03-23-07
I am amazed how much I love this book since I was hesitant to invest a lot of time on a fictional novel about circus people. Was I surprised to find this novel was packed full of suspense, drama, mystery, survival and romance. The book is so incredible, I could hardly put it down. I like a well rounded story with all the elements of suspense, drama, action, mystery, romance and believable characters, and this one has it all and lots more. Can't remember the last time I read a book that brought real tears to my eyes. Bravo to the author and the wonderful narrators!

Historia
Arthur Hart-Synnot, a third-generation British officer, was sent to Japan in 1904 to learn the language of Britain's newest ally. Masa Suzuki, a beautiful Japanese woman scorned because of an early divorce, worked at the Tokyo Officers' Club. The two fell immediately in love and conceived a son before Arthur was whisked away by the military during World War I. Though Arthur would only see Masa little, he supported his Japanese family and kept alive the hope that he and Masa could live together blissfully.

I credit the author with 5 stars for this beautiful manuscript but have to substract 3 for the terrible narration for a sum total of 2 stars. I consider this a generous score considering how badly it was narrated. There was not any fluctuation in vocal pitch or tone even during chapters of war and human suffering. This could have been a masterpiece had it not been presented as a grocery list.
