What was one of the most memorable moments of A Walk in the Woods?

Katz constantly ditching gear.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As usual with a Bryson book, you are taken to a place that is described in such detail that you feel like you were there. Also, the mix of humor and tons of background facts makes for an enriching read.

Any additional comments?

This book, as well as The Thunderbolt Kid and A short History of Nearly Everything, is probably the pinnacle of the Bryson book line.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. This is one of the funniest books I have ever "read". Rick's life and bizarre experiences are beyond belief. What a life! And his storytelling style is spot on for the material.

What did you like best about this story?

Drinking airplanes dry.

Which scene was your favorite?

Probably smuggling Soviet captains uniforms out of Russia.

Any additional comments?

This is a book that anyone would enjoy. Even if you aren't a Wakeman fan, even if you don't like Yes, or prog rock, you will love the craziness of a life beyond anything you could imagine. Booze, money and a Keith Moon-like personality make for some interesting moments. And yes, Keith Moon does thrash a restaurant in this book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It is riveting from start to finish. Pretty much every sentence leaves you on the edge of your seat. The battles constantly surged back and forth, but the most insignificant few yards of territory were enough to defeat an empire that was poised to take over the known world.

What other book might you compare The Great Siege to and why?

Seriously? No other book in my nearly 500 would qualify.

Which scene was your favorite?

You can't really name a scene as this was just one big flowing battle all the way through. The audacity of sneaking reinforcements into a nearly flattened fortress was one of those things that you would never think of doing, but I don't want to give anything away, so read the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Heck yeah.

Any additional comments?

If you crave excitement, want personalities to admire, love history, want to know facts that no one else does, or just revel in the strength of will on one side and the religious fanaticism on the other, then this book will not let you down.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

A reserved yes. The story definitely has some merit. But the stroy writing begins with all of the problems that my son required tutors to remedy. At the start, there is total lack of description. "Katniss walked into the room. It was large. She turned around and saw a boy. She spoke to the boy..." really? Is that how an author writes a book? Can't we ask to be allowed to be given some visual cues? Was the room dark at the far end, was there a faint smell of smoke, curtains possibly hiding something? I don't know, but I'm sure the author would not have gotten a good grade in my town's school system.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Unresolved ending. But knowing it's a trilogy, what would you expect.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Carolyn McCormick?

Honestly, almost anyone. I've got 225 Audible books in my library and only a few clunky narrators. Some have redeemed themselves after a few chapters, or I've just grown to accept them. I really never got the hang of Carolyn. She mostly just read the book. Take someone like Scott Brick and this book would have been presented with feeling, drama, and exhiliration. I've actually picked books just because he read them. I would specifically think twice if I saw Carolyn's name under narrator. Sorry Carolyn.

Any additional comments?

Its a decent book and gets pretty good during the games. I really felt for Rue. But, as far as trilogies go, this ain't no Lord of the Rings.

If you only own one Conan audiobook, this is it!

I love the Hyborian world, but it's not easy to listen to or read much of Howard's work. His constant use of lithe, writhe, and thews, drives me mad. Luckily, these books avoid that. This is definitely his best writing. The second story is so great, virtually another Lord of the Rings. So many memorable characters, so many unexpected plot twists, genuinely inventive storyline and totally impossible to put down. I find reasons to drive long distances in order to get my fix of this audiobook. Like I said in the title, if you own only one Conan audiobook, I can heartily recommend this one!
