This is a very... Slow book? There's no tension or difficulty or drama. Things just happen smoothly. Honestly it's pretty dull. The description says there's some sort of thing that happens but it beats me what it was.

I'll say first that I think the core of these stories are solid and have potential. However, they are in desperate need of an editor and a LOT of cutting of unnecessary text. I'll admit I only made it through the first three books before I had to put it away, but I'll probably come back for the last two later.

In those three books the consistent theme was that at LEAST the last two hours of every book could be removed or condensed down into one chapter. Those chapters had maybe one or two scenes that advanced the story in meaningful ways and the rest was just fluff and repitition. And beyond that, probably another hour could have been cut in the meat of the books by removing all the extremely repetitive bits. The author had a very bad habit of telling the readers things rather than showing, and then telling them over and over and over. While I know the "show don't tell" mantra is nebulous to describe, this book was a good example of "telling". Every little thing was spelled out for us over and over again, and there was nothing to help the reader actually feel what was going on. There was little description of what the characters were feeling or doing.

Beyond that, I think I may be to "woke" for this series. It wasn't sitting well with me that these law enforcement officers were running around acting like thugs, completely disregarding ALL laws (from traffic to felonies), and being general assholes to everyone with very little consequence or real repercussions. I feel like this was done in an attempt to make the characters feel ultra-masculine, but that's such a cop out. You can have ultra-masculine characters who are tough and hardened without making them raging assholes.

SPOILER FOR BOOK 1:

I semi-disagree with the reviewers who say the foursome scenes at the end ruined things. To me I could totally see that being a thing, IF the author had set the stage for it. However, every interaction between the two pairs did the opposite, so it was pretty jarring to *POOF* and have it all happen. Even if the groundwork was laid once Day and God were more established in their relationship it would make sense. To me it felt like a half-attempt at showing Roe and Johnson's story in Book 1 rather than giving them their own book. Without the ground work, it doesn't belong in this book. With ground work AND with Roe and Johnson having their own book, I'm good with the development. This plot belongs in their book.

I honestly didn't care much for the characters and the plot was pretty meh. The writing was repetitive and overly flowery and honestly didn't sound like this author at all. There was no real struggle, nothing too compelling. Previous characters made cameos that felt forced. The narration was fine but not great.

Quit this one after the first sex scene because I couldn't stand it anymore. The guy is straight up controlling and abusive and we're meant to see it a sexy and romantic that he treats her this way. That's not my thing. If I'd known this was a mafia book I never would have bought it because that's standard operating procedure for that subgenre. Unfortunately audible won't allow you to return books bought with cash anymore so I'm stuck giving my money to support this.

Even though I saw it coming a mile away the way this story resolved itself kind of took the whole romance from the story. I know lots of people will find it romantic and swoon-worthy but it just made me feel awkward and dissatisfied. YMMV

I ended up quitting after the first book and returning this. This read like My First Erotica. Everything was spelled out in excruciating slowness. Nothing is left for the reader to imagine, like the author doesn't trust us to make connections for ourselves. The angst was beaten like a dead horse. The backstories were over the top and the plot wasn't complex enough to deal with the depth of damage the author gave these characters. The dialog was clunky and unnatural. Everything felt... Amateur.

The narrator also felt a bit amateur as well. Kind of reminded me of a library read along from my childhood. He gave it a good go, but just didn't work for me.

I wouldn't mind seeing this story written by an author who knew how to deal with massive trauma in a nuanced way, but this is just way too superficial for what the author took on.

First and foremost, this book is unapologeticly kinky erotica. It starts out with the fantasy threesome lots of people think and write about. It continues, but with little pieces of a puzzle dropped. Every chapter and every change of perspective brings another piece of the puzzle to the table until pieces begin to fit together. And by the end you have a complete, beautiful story. It's actually really amazing how the author almost tricks you into seeing the actual story behind the sex.
This is an awesome listen. The narrators all did a fantastic job and acted out the parts rather than just narrating. The writing and descriptions are great, the sex hot and kinky. 100% worth the listen so long as you go in knowing it's erotica first, plot as a bonus.

I despise plots that rely on the characters stubbornly keeping things to themselves when just one adult conversation would fix literally all of the problems. I spent this entire book getting more and more exasperated with Katie for keeping her problems to herself, especially because they had such an impact on those around her. Torpedo your own love life because you're a coward all you want, but don't put your friends and coworkers into danger because you're too chicken to admit anything.

Other than that I guess it was okay? Hard to gauge when I spent the whole time rolling my eyes at the protagonist.

I liked the start to this book. Joss was a believable character starting to accept her trauma so she could heal from it. Then comes Braden busting in, abusing and raping her. Yes, that was rape. She said no multiple times but he kept pushing and manipulating her until she caved. That isn't consent. This is a DNF and return for me. I quit after the first sex/rape scene.
Narrator was fantastic, though.

If a circle jerk over how brave and honorable and amazing soldiers are is your cup of tea, enjoy this one. 90 minutes in I gave up. Story had some potential but I couldn't stop rolling my eyes enough to get there. Going to return this one.
