I hated this book. The author took too much creative license in turning the Hades - Persephone relationship into a storybook love story. Eww… I found it gross.
I’m sure it comes from my own deep aversion to the romanticizing of traumatic situations, i.e. experiences of enslaved women in American history.
Also hated the narrator’s voice for men.

Too many stereotypes in the writing and more so in the narration. The book would have been better if the killer turned out to be anyone else. It was such a let down.

I was really excited for this book. I was expecting a dystopian sci-fi but it turned out to be a poorly executed fantasy novel. The surprise ending wasn’t at all a surprise. Max went from being represented in every other chapter to obviously absent. That told me something was coming. Clearly there was going to be a reunion with a twist.
I was right. It shouldn’t haven’t been so long to get there without any explanation of what happened or was going on.
Was it an accident, alien warfare or magic? Where did it come from? Does it continue with birth? Why does it happen to some people but not others?
Meh

Brit Bennett is a master at character development. She navigates the complexity of humanity between flaws in a way that allows her readers to understand and root for her characters.

This was a well written novel with a frustrating story. The main character was incredibly flawed and was driven by shame and ego. I found myself yelling at her as she would repeat mistakes. Honestly, I don’t think she won. She lived a life that she didn’t want driven by perceptions of success that were not her own.
Some of the character voices used by the narrator were nothing short of ridiculous. I found it comical and distracting.

This book was beautifully written and incredibly relatable. I felt like the author articulated some of my own complex emotions on my healing journey.

What made the experience of listening to The Art of Happiness the most enjoyable?

I downloaded this book while experiencing a personal loss. It was super helpful in focusing on what is important, protecting my happiness and letting go.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

I loved the tie in between the conversation between the author and the Dalai Lama and the group lectures. The alliteration was spot on and I could easily visualize scenes.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from The Art of Happiness?

I want to go back and listen to the meditations again and try them.

If you could sum up Daring Greatly in three words, what would they be?

Amazing
Insightful
Relatable

Would you be willing to try another one of Karen White’s performances?

Nope. NOT AT ALL.
I find Brene Brown to super entertaining and easy to relate to. I wish I had read the reviews before making the purchase. The Karen sounds mechanical and lacks personality. So much so that her over pronunciation is a bit distracting.
