Traditional Gothic
Revisado: 10-26-23
There are veils (between waking/dreaming, sanity/madness, living/dead, science/spiritual/supernatural), There are also creaky floorboards, leering men, creepy servants, an unreasonably strict matron, and a large house in which it is easy to lose oneself. Some of the novel could transport you back to The Monk. There are plenty of fresh ideas too, the more unsettling the more you mull them over. I couldn’t stop listening. Great book in the Gothic tradition.

Chilling
Revisado: 09-06-23
Fantastic use of first-person narrative. Beautifully written horror, which slowly burns to a terrifying peak. Similar literary style to Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, the story gives different yet shattering insights into human cruelty, isolation, and what is “the truth” of what lurks in the dark. Have recommended to all readers and audiobook lovers I know already.

Many wonderful characters, though some of the scenarios get repetitive. The performance is fantastic. I tried to listen to help me fall asleep but I was too invested in listening

Perfect listen

Take a smattering of allusions to beloved stormy characters of the Brontés and set them in motion in a world—that exists on either side of “the veil.” Classic Gothic tale, vivid, and a perfect listen!

Alas, the clues were too clear
Revisado: 03-30-23
I had solved the mystery from one of the earliest chapters. Was hoping for more from the women in the story and the enchantment. But I still enjoyed listening to the story unfold from multiple perspectives—a good book to relax with
