Good story but the narrator isn’t up to par

I think the story is probably great; but, I had moments with this story where I felt I was losing interest. I’ve never experienced that with a Mercedes Lackey book. I hate that it was my experience with this one, especially as it’s the first of a series. The performance style was dated, the narrator’s voice wasn’t great, his character voices were occasionally unappealing, and his renderings of the various emotions didn’t read true. I hate to leave a series unfinished but his delivery pulled me out of the story too often. IF I finish these, it will be in hard copy or kindle.

A new chapter with interesting friends, and enemies

The title is a literal description of this book for me! I loved this return to the All Souls universe & am very excited for future books to come!

Light hearted, sentimental, feel-good

Light hearted story with a feel good ending.

I wish the relationship between Marcellus and Tova had been explored more and that Marcellus had been explored more - but enough was given to tell the tale.

A Short Story with Drama

in her own special style the author manages to convey the feelings and emotions of the characters in a way that brings them to life. this is actually my 2nd time listening, as I am again starting to go through the series, since it has been awhile. My first trip through the world created by Diana Gabaldon was in print, and only included the primary Big Enormous Books. My second, in audio form, included everything from the BEBs to The Shorter, Less Indescribable Novels and The Bulges (her terms), but in a haphazard order. For this third trip through time I am following the author's suggested order that includes all writings in an order that begins with this story. Knowing the characters already, I can still say that this short story is a great introduction to Jamie and Ian.
Additionally, the narrator was pleasant to listen to, even if he did not provide various vocal characterizations while reading. he had a smooth voice that fell into the background as the story itself came to the forefront in my mind.

Very Disappointing!

Very disappointing. Written as if by teenagers, Read as if by a computer.
As if the immature writing styles were not enough to distract from the stories, the multiple mispronunciations by the reader and even the voice of the reader distracted and deterred from the stories.
Very disappointing.

a good tale with a distracting performance

The book itself is a good part of the whole Valdemaran tale; but, the storyteller this time is far less than I have come to expect related to these books. His voice is pleasant and mode of reading is decent, but he has changed the pronunciation of many names, cultures, places, peoples, etc. Add in the overdramatized and totally changed speech style he gives to various characters, the Performer himself becomes a distraction to the story.

A new Performer should be required to listen to the most recent story, at least, to maintain basics like pronunciations and speech styles for characters.

I love the ongoing development of the characters in this series. Achmed & Anborn are two of my favorites as far as character growth goes.

Holmes + Cumberbatch = immersion

I loved it. the intrigue and interest of Sherlock Holmes stories read with the talents and strength if Benedict Cumberbatch's voice gives you a more immersive experience into Victorian England crime drama!!
