Historia
In a sleepy village in the Shire, a young hobbit is entrusted with an immense task. He must make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ruling Ring of Power - the only thing that prevents the Dark Lord Sauron’s evil dominion. Thus begins J. R. R. Tolkien’s classic tale of adventure, which continues in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.

Andy Serkis is great but CAN'T SING
Revisado: 11-10-24
I admire Andy Serkis very much. However, the editors should have made the choice for him to RECITE the songs. By the time it came to Tom Bobadil, my husband and I couldn't take it anymore.

Where has Josephine Tey been all my life? Beautiful writing, wonderful narration, clever mysteries, and a very human detective, who could ask for more? I have another name to add to my pantheon.

Basically Just Bad
Revisado: 04-15-24
I tried this because I love Dungeon Crawler Carl. This is so NOT in the same league AT ALL. The story is sophomoric, and the writing is inept enough to be written by an actual sophomore. Not even the SBT narration can save this book.
In short, if you think you'd enjoy an RPG fantasy by an adolescent male with deep resentment towards the girls who won't have sex with him, by all means listen to this. otherwise AVOID.

Historia
Children are not supposed to rescue their parents, life is supposed to be the other way around. And rescues aren't supposed to be needed on the trip out to the new colony planet Valhalla. Slow, yes. Boring, yes. Dangerous? No, the trip is not supposed to be dangerous, never has been. When thieves attack the transport ship to steal an ancient alien artifact, and young Kaylee and her brother, Manny, are cut off from their parents, they have to stop the thieves from getting what they want.

Not what I was looking for!
Revisado: 09-01-23
I loved the Joe and skippy books, but this book was tedious and just another, in a long line, of stories about children who are very bright and adults who are very dull! I'm tired of this kind of lazy plot line, and frankly am surprised and disappointed in the author. Maybe he Had a deadline to meet? I would not recommend this book to read. I'm hoping we haven't seen the end of Joe and skippy adventures will be zooming our way in the near future.

Elaborate Romance Novel
Revisado: 05-10-22
Ugh! I followed the hype and painfully slogged through most of this book before realizing that it was an elaborately-worded, pretentiously-set romance novel. I am pretty sure that it doesn't pass the Bechtel test. The main character entirely lacks agency. The setting is unrelentingly dismal, and the relationships are depressing and repetitive. Is this why it is supposed to be deep? The writing is so viscous that reading this, even if I had liked the story, would have been hard going. Why use 1 word when you can use 10? Why use 10 when you can use 1000? Oh, and could there be a worse example of "not like the other girls"? I think not. Yuck.

A great book, but not for all markets
Revisado: 04-20-22
Tamsyn Muir, IMHO, is the most brilliant, funny, and original writer in sci-fi right now. She smashes genre, trope, and expectation with a cheerful and gorgeous prose. It is profoundly good, profoundly satisfying.
However, if you are a reader primarily interested in a romping adventure story/space opera, this is not a book for you. It is that, but it isn't straight forward. Even I, who adore her writing, spent 4/5ths of this book very frustrated and completely lost. I can only say that I ended up delighted and IMMEDIATELY read it a second time. It is the single most brilliant use of perspective in plot that I have ever read. I am in awe of Tamsyn Muir's talent.

Huge Plot Holes
Revisado: 04-01-22
Part way through, I gave up and skipped to the end quarter. ???? Really sad exploration of the unreliable narrator. Legally ridiculous. Could not suspend my disbelief long enough to care. Female character is a cypher. However, maybe that's just the POV. The ghost story stuff reminded me of Stephen King at his most arbitrary, insisting on sticking the otherworldly very awkwardly into a very worldly story.
The narration seemed adequate. what was lacking was a believable or compelling narrative. Not worth the time.

Warning: sexual compulsion and gang rape
Revisado: 03-27-22
If you find monotonous catalogues of military training and glib descriptions of cheering on gang rape your kind of thing, this is your book. The author obviously thought he respected women, but I think women readers will disagree with him. Very, very Heinlein in the worst way. I don't think I have ever read a more misleading description of content. I am not a prude, but the forced nature of the supposedly "fun" sexual content struck me immediately, right up until the very obvious gang rape scene, at which point I gave up and Googled "Forever War rape" and got lots of hits. Other people have noticed this content too.
Up until then, there was very little to keep me hanging in there. Monotonous voice. Monotonous, ill-defined characters, bleak, almost rote cynical tone punctuated by hideously inappropriate, compulsory, sexual "romps."
