Historia
The colony on Haven-7 has gone rogue. The colonists have split into two factions: the Techborn and the Dusters. The Techborn have always ruled the planet. They control the remnants of the crashed starship that brought humanity to this new world. The Dusters… they eat Techborn dust. Now, the Techborn strength is waning. Their weapons are getting old, and radiation leaks from the aging reactors have created mutations. Some of these, like their brutish troops known as Tuskers, have proven useful—but others are abominations.

Not as good as B.V. Larson's other series
Revisado: 04-19-25
I am a fan of B.V. Larson's other series, but after attempting to listen to this for a few hours, I finally gave up. It is just not very good.

Not for me
Revisado: 03-12-25
I didn't know what this was. While the heroine is supposed to be an adult, it reads like it is written for young teenage girls. Not for me. From a purely critical viewpoint, it makes no sense to have a heroine who repeatedly gets herself in trouble because she can take care of herself, but she spends most of her time swooning over a couple guys, one a cousin, who she works with. Just not good.

Don't let the lower rating fool you.
Revisado: 10-20-23
You'll see many lower rating reviews. I think it is a 5, but then I base that on the plotting, the character development, and the great writing. The average review of 4 rather than the usual 5 stars you see on the reviews is due to the Trumpers and other vaccine haters who were offended because he actually included what the world was going through during the time period the book covers.
It's a really good book that builds upon Holly's character with a whole new scenario. As you can see from other reviews, some people object to Mr. King mentioning that we had a pandemic, that some people reacted one way while others reacted the opposite way. The science deniers apparently never listened to the Afterward comments from Stephen King where he talks about this and how he addressed it. He wrote a book that reflected what was happening in the country. That included Covid, masks, vaccines, and all the rest. He paints Holly as extremely Covid-scared, which is exactly what you would expect from her character. To those who found this to be proselytizing, all I can say is too bad. He wrote an extremely good book that included the truth.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The usual Scalzi humor and an interesting, if not a little far-fetched, story.

Historia
On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Great Narrator / Story not so good
Revisado: 08-06-23
Ray Porter makes any book easy to listen to, which is why I finished this book. The simplistic view of the world espoused by the lead character (which I assume is the viewpoint of the author) is that all liberals are traitors and bad. Jack Carr has us believe that his character has no political view, but then why does he repeatedly put the idea in that all the bad people are liberals or left wing traitors. I don't mind that the hero has to kill everything that moves, whether there is any proof that they are complicit in the crimes committed against him or not, but do you really need to make it about your politics?

In High Earth, digital entertainment is everything. Shows. Virtual worlds. Simulations - there’s something for everybody in a city where working for a living has been rendered obsolete by technological advancements. Even a short walk outside to visit with others is no longer necessary. Just load into the network and you can be with anyone, anywhere. For Asher Reinhart, nothing compares to Ignis; a live reality show that pushes human beings to their very extremes.

This was a good book. Will Wheaton was excellent as always. I enjoyed the concepts that formed the basis for a future very different than you would expect. The author plotted the book very well.

Only Listen if Christian
Revisado: 08-25-22
This is a book for people who already believe in Christianity. It has a viewpoint. It will use any ridiculousness it can to emphasize that viewpoint. As a book, it is crap. Of course, since it is a Christian pamphlet, it is very predictable.
I actually enjoy reading stories about biblical times, but this isn't good. If the writing was better, it would still be flawed. But the writing is not good. The plotting is not good. The character "development" is non-existent. It is just crap.

Excellent
Revisado: 10-19-21
Once again Stephen King has created a wonderful story that has his usual attributes -- great character development, interesting plot, and a satisfying read. I will start by saying that it took me a while to be fully on board. I didn't care for the setup with what seemed like an unnecessarily complicated plan to murder somebody that few, if any, hit men would agree to. But I got past that as the character of Billy grew and became real. There is no mysticism or dark forces; it is just a good story.
I won't complicate this with any spoilers. This book just reminded me that I love the way King writes and look forward to his next one.

Historia
The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

It's an old book, but it is still excellent
Revisado: 09-02-21
When I purchased this book on Audible, I didn't realize how old it was. It was a time before cell phones, GPS, and many other items that must be considered in a book about a serial killer being hunted by a great detective. That being said, I liked the book a lot. Those modern conveniences make it much easier for the police to track people and gain evidence. To me, as a lawyer who defends cases, I found it strange that a person would be making phone calls from their home that the police could track. But this was then. I still enjoyed the book.

Short, but well worth the listen.
Revisado: 01-18-21
This was an Audible free selection. It was, despite its shortness, worth a credit.
I should start by saying that I am a Scalzi fan. I'd listened to The Dispatcher, and though the concept that both of these books is founded upon is ridiculous, Scalzi makes it seem real and takes it to new and unforeseen places.
One of the things about Scalzi is that he understands that to really get into the book, you have to like and root for your main character. He does this with this series and I thoroughly enjoyed the free listen. Zachary Quinto is a great reader and the book held my interest from beginning to end.
