Karin Slaughter novels are about the only novels I bother to write reviews for. They are so engaging and intriguing that I am nearly left speechless by the end. This is Why We Lied one was no exception. The way the Mercy McAlpine’s story unfolds hooks you immediately and does not let you go until the very end. All suspects, the McAlpine Family’s secrets and motives related to Mercy’s murder are dished out like breadcrumbs but taste like buttered toast. Intricately told in past and present tense, the haunting and combustible story leaves suspicion, sorrow and anger in its wake. While I figured out the “who” early in the story, the “why” completely blew me away. This is why I love KS novels. You never really know even when you think you do.

I had to stop listening at work because I couldn’t control my emotions. How unexpected for a love story about teenagers. But in reality, life happens to them too and this is a beautiful, emotional story about how Rune and Poppy deal with so much life, love and loss at such a young age. The lessons they learn and pass on are ageless.

I’m hard pressed to ever criticize a narrator. I certainly wouldn’t want someone coming on my job doing the same to me. That being said, the male narrator was slightly better, but it was a serious struggle to get through this book because the female narrator was horrible. It was so awful I was distracted from the story; I found myself fast forwarding through the book and finally I just had to get to the last chapter to end my suffering.

slow and monotone for me. Lost interest so quickly I barely caught on that their were “aliens” in the story. I had to stop and rewind because I found my mind drifting off instead of being drawn into the story.

For the first time ever I stopped listening before the first chapter was even over. It sounds like a robot is narrating and it’s so distracting that I can’t pay attention to the story; therefore, I can’t give an honest or thorough review of the book.

Too long and convoluted. It took me about a week to finish what could have been a great thriller. Detours in the plot (Toronto to visit an ex, marrying a stranger in a hurry, only to suit the plot— not because it was necessary) only put off the inevitable conclusion which was clear as day early on. After a gloomy, depressing and long story, the villain is finally underwhelmingly revealed. The writer just tried too hard in my opinion to make the story more intricate than it called for. Sometimes simplicity is better.

So bad I had to warn— or review. Story is predicable and simple. Spineless heroine is gullible too. The narration for the female lead was terrible; dull, boring and unmoving. The three stars are for the male narrator because it was the only tolerable part of the story.

Finally a straightforward love story without all the unnecessary angsty, whiny, back and forth, will he/she, does he/she, if only we, etc. Lauren Blakely wrote a wonderful story for Brent and Shannon and took the time to develop the characters so that you care about why and what happens. Narration by all of the talented artists was on point. Can’t wait read more; on to book two!

I did really enjoyed Fisher and Lucy’s story. I appreciate the light it shines on our veterans and the struggles they sometimes go through when they come back home. The story is a reflection of PTSD’s impact on Fisher and Lucy’s marriage, divorce and their fight to find their way back to each other. The only thing I didn’t like was Lucy’s tendencies to whine. On my nerves early on and nearly led me to not finish the book had the story been less compelling.

OMG, this kind of storyline usually would have been right up my alley. But it took me days to get thru this audiobook. I have never criticized performances before, but hopefully this will be constructive.... The tone and constant whine in the female narrator’s voice was like nails on a chalkboard. I also thought the narrators were too slow. Most of the time it sounded like they were reading rather than communicating. As far as the story goes, it wasn’t bad, but I detest repeated dialogue/inner turmoil about something that could be solved by the characters having a discussion or asking questions. On top of the whine and pity party the female lead was having for herself it was underwhelming.
