Funny, witty, unexpected- great story and great performance. I need to write some more words before I’m allowed to submit even though I’ve said everything I need to.

According to audible, this is volume 3. BUT it seems a LOT has happened between volume 2 and 3- and the thumbnail says ‘volume 4’ which would a lot more sense.
Also, it appears a whole episode is missing from this collection.
One case has only 1 episode but it appears to be the second part only.
It seems audible has made a bit of a hash of things here.

The episodes that are there are as enjoyable as the previous volumes.

I bought this because it was read by Hugh Laurie. I was hoping for a quality piece of writing but was deeply disappointed. It was so boring and predictable. Maybe Laurie really needed the money when recording this!
Only recommended for people suffering from insomnia- it’s guaranteed to send you to sleep in no time.

Very enjoyable dramatization with excellent actors. Fast paced, funny and excellently delivered.
Probably the best PG Wodehouse radio play available.

The story is incredibly, incredibly silly. Full of platitudes and stereotypes. And the plot doesn't even make sense.
Don't buy.

Would you try another book from Simon Brett and/or Geoffrey Howard?

I bought Death on the Downs because I had heard a reading of the first Fethering Mystery on the BBC and I enjoyed it. So I thought I'd give the second one a try. What I realise now is that either Simon Brett wrote the second book in an extreme hurry or the BBC did a wonderful job editing the first book. Given how dull and repetitive Death on the Downs was, I think it might have been the latter.

This book is too long winded, the language is repetitive and the story just does not make any sense. The characters are not developed logically and the manner in which they conduct their investigation is completely nonsensical. Yes, this is supposed to be a lighthearted murder mystery, not an intellectually challenging novel. But it is still possible to write well! The dialogues are so long winded and contrived it makes one cringe.

What was most disappointing about Simon Brett’s story?

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Not even a genius of an actor could save this book, unless it was heavily edited.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
