Historia
The Tournament of the Sacred Sword sounded like exactly the type of thing Keras would enjoy: a series of challenges for thousands of contestants seeking a chance to fight for the Sacred Sword of Earth. He knew there would be challenges. It wouldn’t be a high-stakes tournament without a few high-profile assassinations and mysterious murders, after all. But Keras wasn’t ready to run into someone from his homeland, and he certainly wasn’t prepared for the revelations that came from their confrontation.

A sweet story for winding down
Revisado: 08-22-22
Sometimes when you are traveling, you need that that in-between story that let's your kiddo go from being riled up to a bit calmer. This one is it. Tell your kiddo it's got a dragon in it. Good themes of sharing and sticking up for our friends.

With her inquisitive mind, Charlotte Holmes has never felt comfortable with the demureness expected of the fairer sex in upper-class society. But even she never thought that she would become a social pariah, an outcast fending for herself on the mean streets of London. Starts to drag 3/4 of the way in
Revisado: 03-14-22
The narrator did pretty well. I think there some moments that were funny or had tension that I think were missed out on by the narrator, but overall she did well with the "Holmes-ian" attitude of the book.
The story had a strong beginning and I couldn't get enough, but about 3/4 of the way in it began to lag and I was losing interest in the outcome. I saw it through to the end, but I don't think I'll be getting book two in the series.

Determined to learn the truth about the world, its residents enthusiastically engage in both scientific experimentation and spiritualist pursuits. Séances are the entertainment of choice in exclusive social circles, and many enterprising women - some possessed of true intuitive powers and some gifted with the art of performance - find work as mediums.

Loved it so much, I bought the hardback.
Revisado: 09-18-21
As a witch myself, I enjoy stories about witches, but sometimes feel a bit frustrated by the more fantastical portrayals of witches. Magic, real magick, is all the more delightful because it can actually happen.
These women, these witches, (no male witch characters), are so brilliantly balanced. Human, with faults, but strong of will as well. Magick is an aid to their lives, but does not solely define them. Very well done.
Some might consider the story to be a bit slow, but when seen as a window into their lives instead of being defined by tragedy, it is a far more well rounded whole rather than a cut and paste of what happens to them.
Obviously, I highly recommend this book.

The best kind of book
Revisado: 01-30-20
The best books have you questioning your own life and beliefs and leave you changed. This book did that for me. All the feelings! I laughed and cried... And I listen to audiobooks at work! I loved it and I can't wait to look at the other books she's written.

It's Men's Erotica, let's be honest
Revisado: 09-06-18
All the reviews I've seen were written by men, so as a woman and a feminist, I wanted to give others a little fair warning here. It's definitely an erotica story for men. Now look, there's nothing wrong with that, and I know that I wouldn't want to be judged too harshly for the female perspective erotica I enjoy.
Good points: Shows importance of woman's choice and not taking advantage of girls under age, etc.
Bad points: Author really, really likes submissive women, all women want main character and are ok with sharing him. etc.
There's more that could be said for both good and bad points, but overall I'd say it's decent. Just know what you are getting into.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Wanted to LOVE this
Revisado: 07-26-17
I, like another reviewer, watched the BBC production of North & South with Richard Armitage as Mr. Thornton. Don't get me wrong, I often watch movies or shows & go back to read the book it's based on. I love delving into more detail and getting greater enjoyment from the book. This one was definitely a let down. Not because of the performance, but because of the story itself. I'm usually not this person, but in this case I absolutely agree with every change they made in the BBC production. Save yourself the trouble & just watch it instead. (I honestly can't believe I just wrote that. UGH.)
