Historia
In A Hero of Our Time, Grigory Pechorin is a bored, self-centered, and cynical young army officer who believes in nothing. With impunity he toys with the love of women and the goodwill of men. He is brave, determined, and willful, but his wasted energy and potential ultimately result in tragedy.

A must read.
Revisado: 08-12-23
One of the best books I’ve ever read. Hard to believe it was written in 1839. Highly recommend.

From the Booker Prize-winning author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans comes an unforgettable edge-of-your-seat mystery that is at once heartbreakingly tender and morally courageous about what it means to be human.

Aged so poorly.
Revisado: 03-07-23
Sci-fi novels either age extremely well (Dune) or get stuck in the time they’ve been written. This sci-fi novel aged poorly, probably already a month after it was published. Whether human clones would have a soul is such an uninteresting and dated question, I barley made it through the book. & the entire book relies on this hypothesis. IVF, growing human organs in animals, embryonic stem cell research — all those concepts were not groundbreaking in the year 2005, and they make this poor effort at a moral dilemma fall flat. I am gladly letting this book go. Goodbye.
PS. If you are unaware; this is a young adult novel. A genre that really shouldn’t exist, but it makes the prose unbearably juvenile. Making your characters “clones” is a poor excuse of making little effort to develop your characters. I should’ve learned my lesson with ‘Klara and the Sun’.

Historia
Colombo, 1990. Maali Almeida—war photographer, gambler, and closet queen—has woken up dead in what seems like a celestial visa office. His dismembered body is sinking in the serene Beira Lake and he has no idea who killed him. In a country where scores are settled by death squads, suicide bombers, and hired goons, the list of suspects is depressingly long, as the ghouls and ghosts with grudges who cluster round can attest. But even in the afterlife, time is running out for Maali.

Who whispers while reading an audiobook?
Revisado: 01-12-23
A great book if you want to learn about Sri Lankan history while reading a poorly written fantasy sci-fi murder crime thriller. Also, the narrator doesn’t read the book, he whispers it, a huge issues when trying to listen anywhere out in the open.

A book full of jokes, not of them funny.
Revisado: 11-28-22
What a disaster this book is. The author is trying so hard to be funny, and it failed every, single, time. Self-indulgent, contrived, pointless, story-less. This is an example of how not to write a novel. I keep all the books I read, I’m returning this one. Some moments in the book were so cringey, I almost didn’t finish it (the brunch episode for example). Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Seamlessly transitioning between the absurd and the tenderhearted, balancing acerbic humor with sharp emotional depth, Afterparties offers an expansive portrait of the lives of Cambodian Americans. As the children of refugees carve out radical new paths for themselves in California, they shoulder the inherited weight of the Khmer Rouge genocide and grapple with the complexities of race, sexuality, friendship, and family.

Not a good narration, okay story.
Revisado: 12-02-21
Narration is quite bad, the reader is just not a good reader. I had to re-listen a lot of times to figure out what was being said. I’ve listened to a lot of audio books, and this is the first one where I wanted to slow down the speed.

Historia
In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

The worst audiobook I’ve ever listened to.
Revisado: 01-03-21
This is by far the worst audiobook ever. The narrator changes the speed of reading constantly, even within a single sentence, making it impossible to follow. It’s the one thing you should never do when recording an audiobook. Combine that with awful accents that are used to portray characters ethnic backgrounds, it’s a disaster, and borderline racists. The book itself is very bad, which doesn’t help, it feels like it was written by a 12 year old; undeveloped characters, storyline that feels like was written in a day, with no imagination or detail, or novelty, bizarre and rapid change of emotion and circumstances, really bad. Probably the worst book I’ve read in years.
