Historia
You’re Not a Girl in a Movie is a new collection of powerful poems by Hala Alyan, winner of the Arab American Book Award in Poetry and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. In these nine extraordinary poems, Alyan wrestles with the intimate themes that have driven her acclaimed body of work to date: the aching loss of homeland, the image and worth of women, and the violence of love. In Beirut, Brooklyn, and roads in the American West, she unravels the effects of decades of war and displacement on love and human worth and identity.

Subliminally powerful and ancestrally relatable
Revisado: 01-18-25
It took me a little longer than usual to get into this. this is a thought provoking piece that requires the listener, if not already familiar, to put themselves in someone else's shoes, asking them to try and relate. Then it delves a little deeper. It is my belief that anyone whose ancestral roots do not originate from their current homeland, can or should be able to relate to the weight of carrying our ancestry, their generational trauma; transversing, time and space to convey themselves as inarticulate fears and unexplained instincts. It boils down to you; the composite representation of other beings overall existence given form as a new life to experience another perspective.
This piece was unexpectedly more powerful and relatable than I anticipated. I believe it to be an insightful window for those who might want to try to understand the conflicted dual nature of what it's like to both have and not have a home.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

This was a good short story. It was humorous, good natured, and had really great narrators. I'm looking forward to more stories within the "third district".

Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull is considered one of his most haunting and atmospheric character studies. A would-be playwright is at war with his egoistic mother while the town has become intoxicated by a sensational author. And as the alluring newcomer steals away Kosta’s only love, their new romance could have devastating consequences.

Historia
If we were as tiny as ants to another being, what would they make of our philosophies? The great satirist Voltaire imagines alien visitors who have opinions. Bedtime stories are narrated by the world's most celebrated voices and written with no beginning, middle, or end so you don't stay up to hear what happens next. They're interesting enough to give your mind something to focus on, but delivered in a way that encourages sleep.

Historia
Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts. What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question.

unexpected twist and very good
Revisado: 12-01-23
This was a well written story. At times it was rough because of the realism in certain situations and feelings, but it was still artfully done. It wasn't necessarily explicit or vulgar, just unblemished and raw. This is what made it relatable or at least visual despite the occasional subtlety or vaugueness . I did not expect the ending but i do not think it was lacking in anyway.

a new mythology? maybe.
Revisado: 08-20-23
This is one of those books where you have to finish, irregardless of feeling. That is because there is something, an almost air, about it all; an underlying message that resonates unconsciously with you in some manner. I found it interesting, no doubt entertaining, a little corny, and at times rushed. Sometimes, I felt the character development or shift was rather abrupt. Descriptions or explanations occasionally tacky or repetitive. Situations and relationships a bit ambiguous or slightly confusing.
But I couldn't stop reading and not once did I ever not feel something. I couldn't not see it either. This type of story inspired dreams as I slept and thoughts of possibilities when I was awake. A nice new realm, for lack of a better word, to look forward to.

great
Revisado: 08-18-23
The story was great. I was surprised and laughed a bit more than I expected. The only thing that frustrated me in the beginning was the fact that they changed the narrator from the first book. I established the character voices and articulations off of the first book. it was surprising and slightly irritating to have to reassign/ re-portray them again, even though I know the author most likely selected the narrator. despite the minuscule irritation, everything was great. The narrator did an excellent job and performed the story fantastically! 👏🏽 It was very entertaining.
