Making a Murder Mystery Fun
Revisado: 01-17-25
This was a light diversion from the Sci-Fi, heavier fiction, and dystopian novels that I prefer. The main character, Ann Murray, is a chipper thirty year old bookseller who gets caught in the middle of a murder. Perfectly narrated, but I found the overall tone of the novel too cheerful, even considering the troubles of some characters mentioned, Once you know who dunnit, the rest is wrapping it up and setting up for the next in the series. This one is enough for me.

Historia
In 2005, when Lawrence Summers, then president of Harvard, asked why so few women, even today, achieve tenured positions in the hard sciences, Eileen Pollack set out to find the answer. A successful fiction writer, Pollack had grown up in the 1960s and '70s dreaming of a career as a theoretical astrophysicist. Denied the chance to take advanced courses in science and math, she nonetheless made her way to Yale.

Full of Smug Complaining
Revisado: 10-28-22
Too much smug complaining. Smartly written, but repetitive. I had to stop half way through; and I worked in a field where I was the only woman in the room!

Historia
Duchess Day Radley is a 13-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw. Rules are for other people. She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids. Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up. He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before. And he's in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.

Great Twists

We Begin at the End lives up to its title throughout, including character surprises.
