Historia
It is the 20th century's unrivaled epic: At a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his best-selling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted the history of how the American-led coalition fought its way from North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all - the titanic battle in Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the war's final campaign, and Atkinson's astonishingly fresh account of that enormous gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows.

Historia
As an international war correspondent and radio commentator, William L. Shirer didn't just research the fall of France. He was there. In just six weeks, he watched the Third Reich topple one of the world's oldest military powers - and institute a rule of terror and paranoia. Based on in-person conversation with the leaders, diplomats, generals, and ordinary citizens who both shaped the events of this time and lived through them on a daily basis, Shirer shapes a compelling account of historical events - without losing sight of the personal experience.

Great book, if too long
Revisado: 03-05-20
Shirer and Gardner are always such a great combination. This book is much too long in the early years of the republic, but more than makes up for it I the leadup to and unfolding of the events of ww2.

Historia
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

Great book
Revisado: 07-05-19
Atkinson does a really great job weaving quotes and descriptions from eyewitnesses without losing the flow of his storytelling. He has a hysterical sense of humor, finding hilarious irony in the most serious of battlefield scenes. Narration was excellent as well.

Applying cutting-edge research in the field of positive psychology - the scientific principles taught in his wildly popular course at Harvard University - Ben-Shahar takes us off the impossible pursuit of perfection and directs us to the way to happiness, richness, and true fulfillment. He shows us the freedom derived from not trying to do it all right all the time and the real lessons that failure and painful emotions can teach us.

Historia
In 1941 a 31-year-old Frenchwoman, a young mother born to privilege and known for her beauty and glamour, became the leader of a vast intelligence organization - the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Strong-willed, independent, and a lifelong rebel against her country’s conservative, patriarchal society, Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was temperamentally made for the job. No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence. Fourcade was captured twice by the Nazis - and both times she managed to escape.

Amazing woman. Informative book. Average narration
Revisado: 05-22-19
Amazing woman, informative and moving book. Wish author would've done more research on how Fourcade gained the skills necessary for her work and also the details (I mean the real details) of how she built up her network from scratch. I was very surprised to find that it was not obvious to me as I was reading this exactly why Fourcade's contributions were so vital to her own network. She seemed to spend a lot of time encoding messages, which seems a pretty low level job..
Narration was average. Too much emotion in spots (like descriptions of flowers), and too much dramatization of certain words (like "immediately").
Overall good book.

In this tour de force of dramatic storytelling, distilled from extensive research in newly discovered primary sources, James D. Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Historia
On the first Sunday in December 1941, an armada of Japanese warplanes appeared suddenly over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and devastated the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Six months later, in a sea fight north of the tiny atoll of Midway, four Japanese aircraft carriers were sent into the abyss. Pacific Crucible tells the epic tale of these first searing months of the Pacific war, when the U.S. Navy shook off the worst defeat in American military history and seized the strategic initiative.

Historia
At the center of the debate over American intervention in World War II stood the two most famous men in America: President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who championed the interventionist cause, and aviator Charles Lindbergh, who as unofficial leader and spokesman for America's isolationists emerged as the president's most formidable adversary. Their contest of wills personified the divisions within the country at large, and Lynne Olson makes masterly use of their dramatic personal stories to create a poignant and riveting narrative.

Great perspective, TMI on Lindbergh family
Revisado: 11-12-18
Perspective of the American conversation prior to American entry into ww2 is great, but there is at times too much irrelevant information on characters such as Lindbergh and his family.
A better understanding of Lindbergh's opinions and positions would've been a welcome addition to the book; I am left unclesr as to whether he was intellectually unqualified to lead the isolationist debate, or whether the author didn't properly explain the basis of his views.
I was also not interested in his personal story and that of his wife (nor was it particularly central to the story)
Narration was ok
