Johnson transformed memories of the sermons he heard in the late 1800s by renowned African American preachers into this now-classic work of original poetry. Basis for a PBS documentary on Johnson titled Lift Every Voice and Sing.

Any additional comments?
This production of James Weldon Johnson's book of African-American sermons in verse filled me with joy. Johnson's scholarly introduction is here, as well as an opening prayer and a closing hymn. And in between! The seven glorious poems, each read by a different actor, are given all of the dignity and cadence due to them. The responses of the congregation are a treasure. I cannot think of a better example of American poetry than this book, and this recording just became my favorite way to experience it. I will come back to it again and again.

Historia
Roderick Hudson is one of Henry James's first novels.
Originally published in 1875 as a serial in The Atlantic Monthly, it traces the development of the title character, a sculptor. Funded by the wealthy Rowland Mallet, Roderick Hudson travels from America to Rome, where he becomes the talk of the city. He soon finds that Europe tests him in ways he had not anticipated, both as an artist and as a man.

Any additional comments?
If you have had trouble navigating the winding sentences of Henry James, try this, his first novel. It's normal! An excellent character study of the most rational of men and the most passionate, and the three women who loved one of them.
After Roderick, try some other Henry James audiobooks. He is most understandable read aloud, in my experience.

Historia
Evgenii Onegin is best known in the West through Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin. But the original narrative poem (consisting of 389 stanzas, the form of which has become known as the "Pushkin sonnet") is one of the landmarks of Russian literature. In the poem, the eponymous hero repudiates love, only to later experience the pain of rejection himself. Pushkin’s unique style proves timeless in its exploration of love, life, passion, jealousy, and the consequences of social convention.

If you haven't gotten around to reading Eugene Onegin yet, get this Naxos audio version. The translation by Mary Hobson is very pleasing, and Neville Jacobson's narration is superb. I have read Pushkin's novel in verse in several very good translations, and none is better than this. To finally be able to hear the lines is amazingly satisfying. What's it about, you ask? Oh, Russia, family, society, unrequited love, that sort of thing. You just have to read it to begin to know. And here's a plus--the download is only 4 1/2 hours long, so you can read it 10 times or more in the time it takes to read the average Russian classic. I know I will. If you already know the novel, this version will not disappoint you. If you don't know it yet--well, I already told you what to do.

Such a lovely tale, gothic and romantic, with echoes of the Brontës throughout. Like all excellent children's books, it is a joy to read as an adult.

Historia
"Abandon all hope you who enter here." ( "Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch’intrate.") Dante’s Hell is one of the most remarkable visions in Western literature. An allegory for his and future ages, it is, at the same time, an account of terrifying realism. Passing under a lintel emblazoned with these frightening words, the poet is led down into the depths by Virgil and shown those doomed to suffer eternal torment for vices exhibited and sins committed on earth.

Benedict Flynn's translation is crisp and clear, and Heathcote Williams's narration is flawless. I have several other recordings of Dante's Inferno, but this is my favorite.

Timothy West is Trollope!
Revisado: 12-11-12
Any additional comments?
I am an Anthony Trollope enthusiast, and this is my first time to read The Eustace Diamonds. It is third in the Pallisers series but is definitely a stand-alone book--a character study of one very determined but unscrupulous widow and of the people in her world. Timothy West as narrator is definitely Anthony Trollope as narrator. The humor comes through superbly! Wonderful story, wonderful audiobook!

Historia
Continuing a collaboration started years ago, Benjamin Luxon and Frederick Moyer now turn to the little-explored genre of music for piano and narrator. Enoch Arden first came to international attention with a recording by Claude Raines and Glenn Gould but has since drifted back to obscurity. This is a work that both Luxon and Moyer have loved for many years. The poem is immediately accessible to any audience and tells a heart-wrenching story of friendship, love, separation, and sacrifice.

Historia
Faust is one of the pillars of Western literature. This classic drama presents the story of the scholar Faust, tempted into a contract with the Devil in return for a life of sensuality and power. Enjoyment rules, until Faust’s emotions are stirred by a meeting with Gretchen, and the tragic outcome brings Part 1 to an end. Part 2, written much later in Goethe’s life, places his eponymous hero in a variety of unexpected circumstances, causing him to reflect on humanity and its attitudes to life and death.
