I got this after seeing it mentioned on Graham Norton when the author was a guest. It didn't disappoint overall.
The narrator was mostly good, though she got a little into the weeds with the Jason Ritchey character.
The characters were wonderful. For every apparent flaw, they also had very redeeming qualities.
I don't read much fiction. I thought I was supposed to be filing away clues or something, but the big reveals ended up not relying a whole lot on the sum of the possible clues.

This book really opened my eyes. It got me curious about autism in a way that nothing previously has. In fact, despite likely being less awkward than the author (who claims not to be autistic), I now think I may be (this is not a result of the book alone, but going down the rabbit hole on YouTube and such). I may read it again just to note all the memories that come up that are associated with things talked about in the book. I want to go on, but I find what I'm writing isn't specifically about the book, but about my discoveries about myself.
To be clear, the author touches on certain diagnoses during the book, but does not adopt any diagnosis as the focus. He limits himself to speaking about awkward people, perhaps to keep from stigmatizing any particular diagnosis. If you find yourself relating, though, I encourage you to look into autism. It isn't what I thought it was, and I'm quite happy adopt the idea that I may be autistic even as a seemingly "normal" person with quirks. Apparently, up to 50% of people have autistic traits, so a lot of us are on that spectrum somewhere.

If you're brand new to art and quite insecure, this might be a great book for you.
If you're multiple decades in, most of the arguments put forth in this book will not be very necessary. This book may still be a pep talk for you. It might give you some new editing ideas.

I was actually immediately put off by the book. The introduction treated the author as a peer subject which is not what I was hoping to hear. Thankfully, this gave way to a more proper biography once the book began in earnest.
Parts of the book raced through researched facts with such speed the facts barely registered. Other parts seemed to delight in tabloid, stream-of-consciousness type writing. Both were problematic for me. I got a biography to hear the facts and analysis, but sometimes that came up short. During the tabloid-style writing I couldn't help but feel like my fellow Capricorn musician would not want to be treated so frivolously.
Overall, the book is not bad. My criticisms are primarily my own deal. I do wish there was an editor and some editing to make the book more palatable for me, but, in fairness, that is all my experience.
The narrator was interesting. She did surely try to do all the accents as best she could. Her American was hard, and lacked nuance. I imagine the rest of the accents were similarly a bit flawed. She was very capable otherwise. She read rapidly but gave proper contextual intonation throughout.
I feel like my review may be harsher than I actually feel about the content. I felt the content, while scatterbrained in parts, was also quite good.

Thought Provoking

Mike Michalowicz recommended this book via email in which he implied that he had used the technique. The title immediately intrigued me.
All throughout the reading of this book I would get distracted thinking about doing what the book was asking. I had multiple alter-ego-type events in my teen years where I was able to imagine my way into a state of being that was more desirable than where I started. I even sort of lived a double life back then as a normal kid at school, but a popular kid at the mega church I belonged to. I already understood the power, but it's not something I had thought about in a good long time.
I started to go into my present situation in this space, but it didn't seem like a review of the book so I erased it. It seems like my willingness to talk intimately about my life probably suggests something positive about the book.
In the end, I bought a version to read because I want to go through it again at a pace where I can stop to think and do the things the book asks. Listening to it while driving only gave me the opportunity to think about what was being said.

Narrator was overly dramatic throughout. The metaphor of stars "peppering" the night sky seemed really egregious. The story itself seemed poorly organized.
The person doing the voicework as Johnny Cash was not cast well. He sounded older and more curmudgeonly than one would expect of a Johnny Cash in his 30's.

I really loved this book. Very seldom do I feel like raving about a book, but this book inspired me to often. The content is great and potentially transformative for the right readers. I honestly loved it so much the first time around, I'm going to listen again, because I want to remember some of the techniques detailed within.
The narrator was quite clear and competent. I did ding him a star due to a mispronounced usage of a word that can be pronounced different ways in different contexts. I could understand what the sentence meant, but it should have been read with the other pronunciation in my opinion. I, unfortunately, can't remember the word to name it.
Anyway, wonderful book. I could listen to content like this for weeks and never get bored.

Narrator Doesn't Know Music

I'm not sure why this book is discussing theory in the first place, but I, IV, V chords should not be read as letters. They are Roman numerals, and should be read as numbers. It could only confuse a person new to music theory. Those that already know music theory likely think as I do that the narrator should have been informed about how to read that notation.

This feels like a book you might finish in one sitting. Many times I was curious if it was about to end or not. I love the simplicity. I love the admonishments to be flexible, unpretentious, and right-sized (another word I might be tempted to use is mature). I knew from the start that I would listen again, and I am sure after this first "reading" that I will.
