Historia
As an immigrant who came to the West, El Akkad believed that it promised freedom. A place of justice for all. But in the past twenty years, reporting on the War on Terror, Ferguson, climate change, Black Lives Matter protests, and more, and watching the unmitigated slaughter in Gaza, El Akkad has come to the conclusion that much of what the West promises is a lie. That there will always be entire groups of human beings it has never intended to treat as fully human—not just Arabs or Muslims or immigrants, but whoever falls outside the boundaries of privilege.

Western liberalism’s broken moral compass
Revisado: 03-11-25
Omar El Akkad’s “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” is a profound and unflinching examination of Western liberalism’s moral contradictions, particularly in response to the devastation in Gaza. El Akkad, drawing from his rich background as a journalist and novelist, offers a collection of ten interrelated essays that weave personal narrative with incisive critique. His measured yet impactful prose challenges readers to confront the ethical implications of silence and complicity in the face of systemic violence.

Historia
When Anthony Shadid—one of four New York Times reporters captured in Libya as the region erupted—was freed, he went home, not to Boston, Beirut, or Oklahoma, where he was raised by his Lebanese American family, but to an ancient estate built by his great-grandfather, a place filled with memories of a lost era when the Middle East was a world of grace, grandeur, and unexpected departures.

The narrator butchered the story
Revisado: 09-24-24
The story itself is quite enjoyable, but the narrator is completely wrong for this book. One of the most charming aspects was the inclusion of Arabic words and expressions, which resonates deeply with Lebanese listeners in the diaspora, evoking a beautiful sense of nostalgia. Unfortunately, the narrator's heavy American accent completely butchered these phrases, stripping away much of the book's appeal. It's baffling that they didn’t choose an Arab American narrator, especially when there’s so much talent available, like the narrators of *Salt Houses* or *The Arsonists' City*. It’s a real shame — the story is great, but the narration is absolutely *zifit* (a word the narrator would have understood had they spoken proper Arabic!).

Historia
Many of the most dynamic public companies, from Alibaba to Facebook to Visa, and the most valuable start-ups, such as Airbnb and Uber, are matchmakers that connect one group of customers with another group of customers. Economists call matchmakers multisided platforms because they provide physical or virtual platforms for multiple groups to get together. Dating sites connect people with potential matches, for example, and ride-sharing apps do the same for drivers and riders.
