Misinformation, disinformation, and fake news abound, and it’s increasingly difficult to know what’s true. We are fairly well equipped to spot the sort of old-school bullshit that is based in fancy rhetoric and weasel words, but most of us don’t feel qualified to challenge the avalanche of new-school bullshit presented in the language of math, science, or statistics. In Calling Bullshit, Professors Carl Bergstrom and Jevin West give us a set of powerful tools to cut through the most intimidating data.

Revisado: 07-02-22
Really well thought out book, well read and with plenty of engaging examples. I’d argue that this is as close to a users guide for the internet as one could imagine.

Revisado: 12-23-20
It’s always a treat to hear a book read by its author, especially when the author is as eloquent an orator as Barack Obama. He offers wonderful inside takes on his journey to the White House, the moments of doubt and challenge as well as the times when he was the right person in the right place at the right time.
A must listen for fans of recent history, eagerly awaiting the second volume.

Historia
In 2010 world-renowned innovation expert Clayton M. Christensen gave a powerful speech to the Harvard Business School's graduating class. Drawing upon his business research, he offered a series of guidelines for finding meaning and happiness in life. He used examples from his own experiences to explain how high achievers can all too often fall into traps that lead to unhappiness. Full of inspiration and wisdom, this book will help students, midcareer professionals, and parents alike forge their own paths to fulfillment.

At the time of Clay’s passing this book was never more important
Revisado: 02-02-20
I’m getting around to writing a review after my second listening to this book. Sadly it was prompted by the news of the author passing on just last week. I had found the original HBR article to be thoughtful and important but the book is an even deeper exposition of Christensen’s world view. It is only through deliberate and deep reflection that one can hope to understand what your life’s purpose really is. Once you’ve reached that point it is imperative that you live your life in a way that aligns you with that purpose. The counter examples from Christensen’s 79 HBS class are perhaps somewhat at the far end of the spectrum but the point is well taken - no one sets out with the goal of ruining their relationships or living a hollow existence, yet it is the daily decisions that we make that result in that outcome unless we chose a different path.
My only regret is that Christensen himself didn’t narrate the book (just the intro). I suspect that this might be a consequence of his rehab, but that’s really a minor quibble. I expect to listen to this many times again in the future.
RIP Clay - I think your life measured up exceptionally well.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Well written, thoughtful and fascinating account
Revisado: 05-23-19
Michael Pollan does a masterful job at navigating a fascinating topic that’s hard to define in an audiobook - a journey of learning and experiencing the impact of psychedelics on the human experience without making this either a dry scientific treatise or a cliche-ridden nudge/wink poke at the 60’s. Instead he paints a powerful picture of how these agents have shaped and could shape the human experience. Highly recommended for the scientifically curious mind.

The history and future of our democracy's ultimate sanction, presidential impeachment, and a guide to how it should be used now. To End a Presidency addresses one of today's most urgent questions: when and whether to impeach a president. Laurence Tribe and Joshua Matz provide an authoritative guide to impeachment's past and a bold argument about its proper role today. In an era of expansive presidential power and intense partisanship, we must rethink impeachment for the 21st century.

Solid overview of a complex topic
Revisado: 08-30-18
Nicely narrated audiobook - the topic is surely uppermost in many people’s minds at this time. The authors do a good job of laying out the intricacies, the powers and drawbacks and history of impeachment in the US, diving into the background of Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump to provide examples of prior precedent and highlight the tension between the risks of deciding to impeach and the risks of deciding not to impeach.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Great story telling by Mr Carreyrou and one can’t help but wonder if you could hold your nerve and continue to tell the truth under those circumstances. Historia
Harvard Business School professor Mihir Desai, in his last lecture to the graduating Harvard MBA class of 2015, took up the cause of restoring humanity to finance. With incisive wit and irony, his lecture drew upon a rich knowledge of literature, film, history, and philosophy to explain the inner workings of finance in a manner that has never been seen before. This book captures Desai's lucid exploration of the ideas of finance as seen through the unusual prism of the humanities.

Revisado: 04-30-18
What more do you need to know? A remarkable book that is both intellectually satisfying and entertaining. Mihir Desai does an admirable job of convincing the listener that the rich tapestry of life is mirrored and in part explained by the fundamental tenets of finance. Having forced myself through more traditional finance textbooks for my own MBA studies I have to admit Prof Desai’s approach would have undoubtedly made that journey a lot easier and interesting! I tip my hat.

Historia
"I had never planned to become a savanna baboon when I grew up; instead, I had always assumed I would become a mountain gorilla," writes Robert Sapolsky in this witty and riveting chronicle of a scientist's coming-of-age in remote Africa. An exhilarating account of Sapolsky's twenty-one-year study of a troop of rambunctious baboons in Kenya, A Primate's Memoir interweaves serious scientific observations with wry commentary about the challenges and pleasures of living in the wilds of the Serengeti-for man and beast alike.

Beautiful story - both about human and non-human primates
Revisado: 03-01-18
As an existing fan of Robert Sapolsky, I was keen to learn more about his work with Baboon Troops to understand more of where his insights into human nature originated. In this book the listener is gradually drawn into Robert’s world, with often outrageously funny, frequently poignant and often very human reactions to life in Africa, how hierarchical cultures originate and sustain themselves and the bitter struggles faced by species that must coexist with humans on this planet. An amazing read/listen.

The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".
