I am always hesitant to review the work of others because I do respect the effort that they put into the work and understand that for them, this is their baby. I was first attracted to this book because of all of the great reviews. After about the first 10 minutes, however, I knew this book was not for me. At 47 years old, I probably have more than 500 science-fiction and fantasy books in my library. I have also seeing all the classic sci-fi movies. This book contains a collection of clichés borrowed from a variety of action movies and science fiction classics. I would say that this book is a combination of the new Battlestar Galactica series, the Alien movies and the typical War movie, all rolled into one. You have the brusk hero with a death wish after the death of his family, the child figure that looks up to him, the heroes friend who charges him with the care of his child, heroes overcoming impossible odds due to the sacrifice of one of their team members, etc. One the positive side, it was like watching a summer blockbuster action flick that has all the familiar parts but manages to hold your attention anyway. I won’t return the book because I was somewhat entertained but I’m not going to continue the series. If you are a young reader looking for an action packed story, this book would be a good investment. If you are an experienced reader who is looking for something new, look elsewhere.

It could be that I'm missing some subtlety of the storyline, but I'm finding it hard to believe that this book was written by Gene Wolfe. This is entirely unlike his previous books. Perhaps he is trying a new approach to his style of writing. I found the story somewhat convoluted which I don't necessarily dislike but it was wholly unsatisfying at the end.

Where does The Golem and the Jinni rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Middling. The story was slow in some areas but I have to give the author many kudos for not following the usual formula for books of a fantastical nature. The story is unique and the characters engaging. The backgrounds of the characters and their culture are well thought out and researched.

Would you recommend The Golem and the Jinni to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes.

What does George Guidall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His narration is wonderful and does an extraordinary job of fleshing out the characters and emotions.

If you could sum up House of Chains in three words, what would they be?

Like an onion. These books require multiple reads to get the entire story. Each read, however, is entertaining on it's own level. You never feel like you are re-reading, you feel like you are exploring more deeply. I have listened to all the books in the series at least twice and plan to continue to do so.

What other book might you compare House of Chains to and why?

Difficult to compare.

What does Michael Page bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love Micheal Page but it was and adjustment at first. I also found it annoying that he changed the voice of Leoman of the Flails. At first he has a more Asian Indian accent. Suddenly he has an more laid back English accent. Getting used to the new interpretation takes time.

I rarely write reviews on books. In fact, I rarely write reviews on anything. However, The Red Wolf Conspiracy earns the boon of my efforts. I am a science fiction and fantasy veteran. I have been actively reading books from these genres for the past 28 years so I feel I can offer an informed opinion. In addition, I have been listening to one or two audiobooks per month for the past two years or more. Over that time, I have come across many books that I might not have read otherwise. The Red Wolf Conspiracy audiobook rates among my favorites for many reasons. The complex story holds interest without feeling contrived. The characters are engaging and allow the reader to develop an desire to know more about them. The narrator, Michael Page, creates an wonderful ambience with beautifully fleshed out characters and an attractive English accent. Finally, Robert Redick's story allows the reader to dive deeply into a robust, many faceted, fantasy leaving them wanting more.
