Not my favorite Joe Hill

I really enjoyed the narrators, particularly Kate Mulgrew who is just amazingly versatile and animated (probably my all-time favorite narrator). The stories are extremely creative in plot, but I would expect no less from Joe Hill, as the son of you-know-who. Still, after listening to Heart Shaped Box and Nos4a2, I found myself a bit disappointed with these.

Great story, great narration!

I had only read one McMahon novel (The Winter People) before listening to this one. Though I found it slightly slow to get into - which might have had less to do with the actual story and more to do with my own schedule at the time - once I did, I couldn't stop listening until it was finished....and this was one I hated to see end. Very suspenseful, great character development, wonderfully narrated - overall great listen!

Among my FAVORITE Gerri Hill books!

I loved everything about this book - the setting was magnificent, really pulled the reader in, and the characters were so realistic in their vulnerability and grief. Loved the story line. After listening to this book, I have sought out other listens narrated by Abby Craden, because she did such a beautiful narration of this book! And the sex....well, one of Hill's best to date!

Should be required reading for teens, young adults

I loved everything about this book, and plan to incorporate it into my college courses as much as possible (I teach human services/social work)...while a work of fiction, everything about this story is real and relevant to today's society.

Introducing Hill's new female detective, Harper Jeremiah, in a suspenseful story line, plus some pretty "hot" scenes...a really good read for Gerri Hill fans!

Not Quindlen's best

I love Anna Quindlen; she's a brilliant writer and can completely submerge a reader in details of the every day, mundane human experiences. This book was an exception for me; though the narrator was excellent, I just couldn't stay focused on the story line. To be fair, I am writing this review while only being halfway through the audio book...but at this point, despite knowing that surely the story must get better (?), I just don't know if I'm going to finish it.

Terrible narration....

I'm a fan of Bohjalian, and this short story prequel seems like a good start to a good novel, but it was hard for me to even get through the nearly hour and a half of poor narration. It is unfortunate with audio books how great an impact the narrator can have on the listener's subjective experience of the author's work....a so-so novel can be made great through the narrator's story-telling abilities, but conversely, and excellent author and novel can be made just so-so.
