Following the disastrous Java Sea campaign, the Allies went on the offensive in the Pacific in a desperate attempt to halt the Japanese forces that were rampaging across the region. With the conquest of Australia a very real possibility, the stakes were high. Their target: the Japanese-held Soloman Islands, in particular the southern island of Guadalcanal. Hamstrung by arcane pre-war thinking and a bureaucratic mind-set, the US Navy had to adapt on the fly in order to compete with the mighty Imperial Japanese Navy, whose ingenuity had fostered the creation of its Pacific empire.

A German known for victories in a war that his country lost, a cavalry officer made famous as mounted combat disappeared, and an aristocratic hero in a century dominated by democracy; Richthofen's celebrity stands in stark contrast to the era.

Superb: detailed yet human

This is one of the best (audio) books on war I know; the detail is great, it’s good to hear stories from both sides and the reading is excellent. I found it absolutely compelling and cannot recommend it highly enough.

A weak narrative made even worse by the reader

I thought this would be an historical story of the Medici; it’s actually weak fiction around a few historical facts. It’s poorly written, with fictional seduction scenes and the author’s constant use of unnecessary, bad, metaphors (“his horse ran so fast he felt he was on some mythological beast”) are laughable...but wait until you hear the performance - the narrator over-dramatizes every word and even tries different voices for different characters; his ‘female’ voices are straight out of Xmas pantomime shows...wait until you hear his ‘female’ character during the seduction scenes....it’s cringe-inducing. Overall this feels like it’s written and produced by middle school kids who have yet to learn nuance and subtlety.

Interesting story but...

He has a great story of recovery but for me this audiobook could have been better: (1) during recording a pop-shield on the mic wasn’t used so we hear the constant click of saliva and swallowing (2) the recovery story is great but this is also billed as a book about ultra-running and, for me, the didactic part is too strong (3) there’s nothing wrong with patriotism, but in this book it’s very overt and, as a non-American, that’s uncomfortable -
