Country of Ash is the starkly compelling, original chronicle of a Jewish doctor who miraculously survived near-certain death, first inside the Lodz and Warsaw ghettoes, where he was forced to treat the Gestapo, then on the Aryan side of Warsaw, where he hid under numerous disguises. He clandestinely recorded the terrible events he witnessed, but his manuscript disappeared during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After the war, reunited with his wife and young daughter, he rewrote his story.

This was a fascinating book. I am assuming it was true. Books about the Shoa is very interesting. I have never read one about a Doctor before. Also very few about Poland (Lodz). The protagonist ( the Doctor) is very realistic.

I actually struggled through the book. I think it was because Eve and Roark were at such odds with each other. It made them seem more normal and not in tune. It had the usual twists and turns but lacked the usual unity. I could see both sides but didn't like it. Eve wasn't understanding even knowing why Roark felt as he did. He always ends up giving in. She loves the law and I understand her need but sometimes she should see his side and need to protect her!

This is one, possibly the best of the In Death series and I have read them all since the first. The growth and careful introduction of new continuing characters have simply made the books better and better. For instance Truheart getting his detective shield and speaking of bringing an old character in to replace him in the bullpen. The continuing growth of the relationship between Dallas and Roark is impressive, as are the love scenes and please don't let anyone say they are too graphic. After all these books are for adults. Galahad is wonderful as are the other recurring characters such as Peabody, Mavis and others. Please don't stop writing this series. I love Feeney, Leonardo and even Trina and Sommerset. The touches of humor are so refreshing.

Yost makes a great villain. He is a pro and it takes Eve and Roark to stop him. Magdalena's son is a true louse and all the really bad guys are so rotten.
Mick is the only exception because he remembers his loyalties. I realize his death was probably inevitable but hate it!

I really enjoyed the book. Please continue this series for as long as possible.
I know you said Eve and Roark will not have a child but it would be a wonderful story and Summerset would make a "great" nursemaid. I know Roark has mentioned he wants children and I don't see why it would hurt Eve's career. Many Policewomen have children.
What about Peabody and McNabb grow up.
And get married. She doesn't seem to be maturing at all.with a child, if she ever grows up?
Both might even add more depth to the stories I love.
Eve would have to spend a bit of time taking it a bit easier when pregnant but it's about time they expand the series
