Historia
Acclaimed author Jonathan Rosen’s haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness.

Enlightening discussion on mental illness

I enjoyed this book very much. It was very sad and I was quite moved. An excellent read for someone interested in schizophrenia.

Historia
Don and Mimi Galvin seemed to be living the American dream. After World War II, Don's work with the Air Force brought them to Colorado, where their 12 children perfectly spanned the baby boom: the oldest born in 1945, the youngest in 1965. In those years, there was an established script for a family like the Galvins—aspiration, hard work, upward mobility, domestic harmony. But behind the scenes was a different story: psychological breakdown, sudden shocking violence, hidden abuse. By the mid-1970s, six of the 10 Galvin boys, one after another, were diagnosed as schizophrenic.

Eye openin
Revisado: 02-13-24
This was an extremely well written, well researched and very eye opening account of how little is known about mental illness. I found their story sad as there seem to be little hope for the boys with the limited treatment options available. I think this story will haunt me for a long time.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

I found this story beautiful and sad, just as it is in true of life. The narrator is excellent! The story is well written. I will think about these characters for days to come.

Awareness awakens you to the truth that you possess everything you need right now to be happy and fulfilled. Happiness is your natural state. You don't need to do anything to acquire it; you only need to drop something. This audiobook shows you what that is. There is not a single person who ever gave time to being aware who’s quality of life didn't change. You see life differently because you are different. You respond to people and situations differently. You see things you have never seen before. Beautiful things. You're much more energetic, much more alive.

Just wonderful. I must listen to it once more as there was so much to think on. His message speaks to the heart and is given with so much wit and humor I had to invite others to listen as well.

Historia
Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith.

This was a very interesting read. I learned a lot about the Mormon religion. Perhaps too much because I will never see it the same.

Very insightful and timely review of a piece of history that once again illustrates why we are where we are today. It saddens me how much fear plays into our sense of humanity.

Sad story

This was a sad story. I wasn’t crazy about the narrator as he was somewhat monotone but the story itself was real written. There were parts that made me cry.
