Great story.

This is a great start of a series that I have been enjoying for a while now. The cast is a set of Narrators that really bring life to the character. I hope to listen to the rest of the series when they get release.

Great modern fantasy story.

This was one of the best fantasy stories that I have read this year. MC gets caught up in a magical incident while at the gym and is place under arrest by a shady magical organization. While there he is informed that he will be drafted into the organization and upon closer look discovers that more than 30% of people who go through the draft are killed, mostly for political reasons. Running is the only option he sees as he begins his journey to become the paranoid mage. Archmages are hunting him down and most knowledge of great magic is a closely guarded secret only passed down from master to apprentice. Great story and will grab the next one when it comes out.

Great story

Love the Australian isekai main protagonist who is probably not evil. They have only explored a small portion of the world but there is so much potential for a series. Some of the funniest parts are when he goes to meet new people. A recording of a fight got heavily spread around so everyone he meets has to ask "aren't you the one with the evil powers?" I hope the next book is even half as good as this one. If you are a fan of fantasy novels then you will probably enjoy this one. There is a bit of a rpg system that the main character has that lists his skills progression and quests but it doesn't really take you out of the story. Some novels list out your stats every 3 pages but this one actually flows with the story and only appears occasionally. The story isn't padded down with things like "rock throwing has reached level 6" He has a set of skills that he progressively picks up throughout the story and actually uses them. Loved the story and have already pre-ordered the next. This is an author that I will keep my eye on

Was ok at first but goes downhill pretty fast.

It starts out pretty good with its magic system and him training but then half of the book is about how his wife is cheating on him as he is trying to save the kingdom. Then how she goes through great lengths to try and convince him that the child is his when he never slept with her for several months after the marriage. Literally everyone but him knows that the child isnt his and how she lied to him when he was treating her so well and even saved her from being raped. He was going far out of his way to treat her well and she completely betrays him. He would be going out to help the prince while she was inviting her lover into his house. Stopped reading after that. There is a few more books in the series but im not supporting the author after this.

Really enjoyed this book. A great start to the series. There is a great gradual introduction of rpg elements to the series in the beginning. We need more books like this on audible for us to listen to.

Tries to advance by learning the wrong lessons

Suddenly forgiving the nobles for all the problems they have caused him came out of nowhere. These people literally bought their way into the sect and constantly bring down the commoners in there. "Why don't we all just ride our demon beast horses there? It would be so much faster?" No one else can afford the beasts. Try to be a pill refiner? Reserved exclusively for nobles. Try to be a blacksmith? Only nobles can afford the materials. Inner sect members? "What do you think your're looking at?" Immediately grasps at sword and threatens a sect member 3 cultivation levels below them. Try to go to class? Have to pay for it. Stuck at a cultivation level? Just buy your way to the next level with an assortment of expensive pills. He makes his breakthrough by apologizing to all the people who try to either prevent him for advancing or literally trying to kill him. Poor and stupid Main Character.

Murder, torture, and rape are a major theme here

spoilers I couldnt actually finish the story with how disgusted I felt at the character tempest. I like super hero books but I think that a more appropriate name for her would be poison due to the things she does. At the beginning of the book zack and tempest are fighting the main villian and she steps back and just lets him finish off her partner. Then there is the fake outrage at the villian she displays and simple lets him get away. She had been obsessed with zack due to the device and couldnt stand the fact that he was gay. Zack had probably turned her down and was actually able to defend himself with his powers. So she finds a new weaker user. During the first fight with villians she doesn't join in until Zacks death. Ty's abilities dont rely on strength but intelligence. Ty repeated multiple times that he didn't want to be involved with her or on her team. Just wanted to live a normal life and pay off his debt. she leads a number of villians to his appartment where they destroy the place and almost kill him. Tempest then tortures the men for information. Vulnerable due to the attack, he is forced to flee to tempest's hideout. The device compels you to be attracted to other users against your will. He said multiple times that he wasn't interested due to this. Before taking him back to the base, she took him out into the middle of the wilderness and raped him. The rest of the novel is simply him under the influence of the device being compelled to help the "heroes". Had she simply brought him to the base he would have been able to take off device before the serious negative effects of it took place. He has to help them now. if he takes it off he will die. If he tries to leave the "heroes" will either kill him to gain a device back or lock him in some blacksite until he dies.
