Couldn’t ‘put it down’. It is as inspiring as it is inconceivable. I am so grateful this man made it, became a better person for it and is using his story to create real and impactful change. Definitely a must read!

Author is raw and real and doesn’t hold back to make herself look infallible, which is very grounding. Hard to put down, very interesting and entertaining. Solid rec.

It had exceptional rhythm and pacing. It is both heart wrenching and inspiring. The narrator was phenomenal. Didn’t want it to end. Highly recommend!

Historia
Vince Granata remembers standing in front of his suburban home in Connecticut the day his mother and father returned from the hospital with his three new siblings in tow. He had just finished scrawling their names in orange chalk on the driveway: Christopher, Timothy, and Elizabeth. Twenty-three years later, Vince was a thousand miles away when he received the news that would change his life - his younger brother, Tim, propelled by unchecked schizophrenia, had killed their mother in their childhood home.

I really enjoyed this. An honest look separating serious mental Illness from the person it holds on to. Well done. We are more than our endurance.

Historia
In 2002, at age 28, David MacLean woke up in a foreign land with his memory wiped clean. No money. No passport. No identity. Taken to a mental hospital by the police, MacLean then started to hallucinate so severely he had to be tied down. Soon he could remember song lyrics and scenes from television shows but not his family, his friends, or the woman he loved. All of these symptoms, it turned out, were the result of the commonly prescribed malarial medication he was taking. Upon hisreturn to the States, he struggled to piece together the fragments of his former life in a harrowing, absurd, and unforgettable journey back to himself.

Some interesting stories but felt self indulgent
Revisado: 08-28-22
Well narrated but felt hedonistic and judgmental of certain types and classes of people. Antiquated viewpoints, and hard to listen to at times. Some stories were good, others were cringy. Not my favorite.

Historia
Each year thousands of young adults deemed out of control - suffering from depression, addiction, anxiety, and rage - are carted off against their will to remote wilderness programs and treatment facilities across the country. Desperate parents of these “troubled teens” fear it’s their only option. The private, largely unregulated behavioral boot camps break their children down, a damnation the children suffer forever.

Revisado: 03-14-22
As someone who 20+ years ago had been through the kidnapping, the wilderness program, and two different treatment centers for issues that felt like normal teenage things (the wilderness program has since been shut down due to death) this was very validating. It IS an industry for anxious parents, not teens. I’m so glad I found this. Thank you for sharing these stories, truly.
