Historia
Lila Bruce Breedlove never quite felt at home in Wesleyan, Georgia, especially after her father’s untimely demise when she was a child. Both Lila and her brother, Henry, fled north after high school, establishing fulfilling lives of their own. In contrast, their younger sister, Abigail, opted to remain behind to dote on their domineering, larger-than-life mother, Geneva. When their elderly mother dies suddenly and suspiciously in the muscadine arbor behind the family estate, Lila and Henry return to the town that essentially raised them.

Well written, but could have had a bit more going on
Revisado: 09-05-23
The story somewhat kept my interest while driving and taking long walks, but I kept waiting for more to happen than the predictable outcome to which we were lead. The author absolutely has a beautiful way of describing scenes to draw the reader (listener) in. Beautiful words woven together perfectly. I just wish there was more “there” there.
For those who are fans of Xe Sands, I’m with you. Especially from the Kristan Higgins books. That said, I feel she missed the mark with the heroine’s voice. Somehow she did okay with the very Southern characters…but not with the “slightly” Southern. Overall very good though.
Final note is that I agree with many of the reviewers in that I feel some mention of the LGBTQ storyline should be written into the book’s summary. Especially when it is the overarching plot theme like this one, (and Jodi Piccoult’s “Mad Honey.”) It wouldn’t necessarily keep me from ordering a book, but I would like to know what type of story I am buying. Especially with Audible’s increasingly stringent return policy.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 04-11-23
The novel kept my interest as I drove and took walks, but I found myself thinking so many times, “That could never happen,” that I lost respect for the book. A few examples: Being asked to host a live cooking show without any experience, never having a rehearsal, never seeing the show’s set before walking on seconds before hosting the very first live show. Everyone talking about how good her food was when prior to hosting the show, there was never even any reference to her cooking other than making coffee with a complicated process using beakers, and she turned her own kitchen into a laboratory. Her daughter was 4-5 years old and spoke as eloquently as an adult and had the reasoning skills to match, and the narrator’s voice of Madeline read the character as though she was at least 15 or 16. I found that to be a serious flaw. Mainly, Elizabeth was not a likable person, other than her fierce independence and refusal to put up with being mistreated. Finally, I felt there could have been some give and take between belief in God and Atheism. Why is it so much more difficult to believe in a supreme being than an explosion in space creating everything. Neither has ever been proven. I did love the dog, because I am a dog lover but felt his character pushed the book into more of a fantasy category.

Not his best-overly detailed and boring
Revisado: 12-18-22
If you want to hear how someone did the same things over and over again, peeling carrots, buying apples, packing her son’s lunch, buy this audiobook. The second story that paralleled, was mildly more interesting but not much. If you do get the book, I recommend setting the time to 1.5 since the readers are so slow, with so many pauses.

It’s “a lot,” but a good listen.
Revisado: 04-20-22
Mostly a very good, well-written story, with mostly realistic-sounding dialogue. The characters were very well drawn, other than one or two of them being a little cartoonishly one-dimensional, such as Andrew’s fiancé and her father. In a few places the book stalled a bit, getting bogged down in too much of life’s minutiae. At the same time, those parts made it very realistic. Maybe a little too much so. LOL.
I vacillated back and forth between feeling that the actor reading Annie/Anna did a great job and that she completely overacted them part. I guess overall, it would have been better had she toned things down just a hair. I did enjoy that different actors played each part/chapter.
I also liked how everything was woven together and especially appreciated the interview afterward with Wally Lamb on his writing process. Loved knowing that he doesn’t use an outline, and somehow brought all of the pieces together in the end.

Historia
In this best-selling novel, Patrick D. Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

Captivating!
Revisado: 04-01-22
Okay, so I’m 56 years old but when I was a teenager, living in Florida, my Mom bought this book in hardback, read it and urged me to read it. All these years later, I still have the hardback she purchased, but had never read it. It popped up in audible, and I figured this might be the only way I’d to experience this story, since I don’t seem to have the time to sit down and read but do spend a lot of time walking and driving. Wow, is all I can say. The McIvey family pulled me in from the beginning of their pioneering life, with its trials and tribulations around every corner. Yes, it was filled with tragedy. If you are looking for an uplifting, happy book this is not it, but neither did I find it too depressing. It was realistic for what life must have been like for a prospector in that era. The story was woven together beautifully, and I loved the relationships the McIveys formed with the Seminole Indians (I’m an FSU grad!) and various n’er-do-wells over three generations. Despite the story being 14 hours long, I did not want it to end. The narration by George Guidall could not have been better and I will seek out other books narrated by him.
My advice is to get this audiobook, and if you do, when you are finished with it, I highly recommended re-listening to the first chapter immediately after. It will help put the whole thing back into perspective and really helps bring closure.
Enjoy!

Pretty improbably, but a good story nonetheless

There were some details given at the end that would have been better given at the beginning to help the story seem more plausible. I spent most of it wondering how such a chance encounter could have occurred. The story was good, though, and kept my interest.

Sweet, heartwarming, and a little unrealististic
Revisado: 05-26-21
I have listened to almost all of Kristan Higgins books and I enjoyed this almost as much as my favorites, (If You Only Knew, Life and Other Inconveniences and On Second Thought). Though, I did find myself frustrated by Lucy. Her reluctance to get on with her (love) life, and to follow her dream of being a pastry chef made me lose respect for her. I wanted her to push harder against the widows to update the pastry shop in her own vision, since none of them seemed to care about its fate and Lucy had the passion for it. Otherwise, it was a sweet story and kept my interest. As always Xe Sands narration was spot on. Her ability to voice a male character is amazing. Great range!

Can't recommend highly enough!
Revisado: 11-26-20
It's been a very long time since a book has grabbed my interested as this one did. The intricacies of the rich tale, the characters, descriptions, realistic dialogue--it was all so well-crafted I couldn't stop listening. Now I'm disappointed I didn't make it last longer. :)
My only negative comment, was that I felt the voice for Morgan was a little too old. That said, all of the other voice work was AMAZING and Susan Bennet should be beyond proud of the mastery of her skills.
I've been recommending this book to everyone I know. I even relayed each plot turn to my husband over dinner every night because I had to talk to someone about it! Now he doesn't have to read it. haha.
