Worth a credit.
Revisado: 04-03-25
This book is a good mystery with fantastic narration.
The protagonist is likable but could’ve had a bit more dimension/depth.
The story also could’ve had much more atmosphere and descriptive language.
There are many opportunities for a sense of place to be established which could’ve made things much more suspenseful and interesting.
This book jumps around and at first it’s a bit disorienting but stick with it and you’ll see it pays off in the end.
It’s not the most original mystery I’ve read but it is interesting enough to hold one’s attention from start to finish.
The narration does a lot to make this book a more engaging listen.
Stephanie Racine is a master of the craft,
I will recommend this book but I wouldn’t give it a second listen.

Weak
Revisado: 03-22-25
This author has proven that she is capable of penning remarkable mystery/suspense titles.
This almost reads as if it was written by someone else.
The characters are weak and poorly developed.
There is never a true “sense of place”established (despite the exotic locations) and the story is 2D and lacking any real feeling of suspense or mystery.
It’s silly, improbable, and worst of all, it’s not entertaining in the least.
These five characters are never fully realized and that ruins the entire story.
I love this author (The Wild Girls was extraordinary) but this book left me scratching my head wondering who wrote it.
The narration is great but could not save this one.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 02-08-25
This book was nicely paced, with well developed characters.
The narration leaves a bit to be desired but the story is a unique and intriguing one.
I was hoping for a more poetic ending as it relates to the fox, and our female protagonist (it felt like a lot more could’ve been done there to give this tale a jaw dropping finish)
Things are wrapped up a bit too neatly in the end. Given all of the emotional investment in these characters I think that a more nuanced and dare say a “more human approach” to the finish would’ve been more satisfying.
Still, this is a solid listen.
Looking forward to this author’s future offerings.

Fantastic
Revisado: 01-27-25
As an avid reader of Alice Feeney I had very high expectations going into this.
Usually when this is the case I’m disappointed because I’ve hyped it up so much that it’s almost destined to disappoint.
However, I am delighted to say I was truly mesmerized listening to this from the first chapter. The way the opening seizes the reader and just does not let go is something so wonderful and rare.
I stayed up all night when I desperately needed sleep because I simply HAD TO KNOW what happened next.
My only complaint (and it’s minor) is the “men=bad” element that is threaded through the story.
There are many interesting, even fascinating female characters but then we have Grady (our male protagonist) who is sort of viewed through the sum total of his flaws rather than the complexities of a man who is clearly interesting. talented, and very, very damaged.
There could’ve been more nuance there-he’s a wonderful protagonist and carries the entire story quite well.
But he got a bit of a raw deal-all the women in the book are somehow victims of men-in one way or another and I found this hard to accept.
But it works for the purposes of the story and it’s a damn good story that I will most certainly be reading again.
I honestly believe this is her best book yet, and she’s written some killer books in this genre.
She is ridiculously talented.
Richard Armiitage is an incredible performer and so were the female characters.
But Armitage has a talent that is very rare, much like Alice Feeney.
He is unique and his craft has evolved.
Love love LOVED this book.
Well worth the wait!

Historia
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Mediocre
Revisado: 01-14-25
This book was enjoyable enough as a free listen but the plot summary is misleading.
Reading the summary one would believe that this story will play out as a spooky isolated island locked room mystery where the reader is to suss out who the killer is.
In reality this book is a police procedural with the isolated island component only being a minor and faint aspect playing out in the background.
The characters are interesting but there are FAR too many to keep up with. This story would’ve been much better with fewer characters, more focus on the creation of a sense of place-an atmosphere so that one can truly feel the story and be excited to be along for the ride.
The narration is ok-but this book really needed multiple narrators.
And for heaven’s sake if a performer cannot achieve a British accent PLEASE bring in someone who can for those sections.
It’s hard to listen to an American just BUTCHER a British accent (and there’s and entire family from the UK here, so there are many sections where the accent is needed)
Interesting enough but not a book that I will ever listen to again or that I would pay for.
I’d be willing to give this author another chance-there is certainly potential there but this one just had too much going on and that prevented me from feeling like I could really connect with any one character.

An Odd Book
Revisado: 01-10-25
I had a very difficult time getting into this one.
It’s graphic in a way that makes one’s skin crawl (the depictions of being trapped in the well just get darker and darker and I didn’t have the stomach for it)
But the story was constructed in a way that is unique at least.
I won’t be listening to this book again and found it to be tough going for the first several chapters.
If you’re into dark things and enjoy viscerally disturbing descriptions of suffering then this is your book.
I would like more time spent on atmosphere, character development, and setting the scene so that I could feel the story in a more tangible, realistic way.
Anyone can write something that will disturb another person. The real talent lies with those writers who know how to make the reader uncomfortable/tense/freaked out without using overtly disturbing depictions of each scene.
Worth a listen but not a second.
Great narration and an interesting premise though.

Excellent
Revisado: 01-06-25
I’ve read or attempted to read all of Riley Sager’s books. It’s been hit and miss and rarely an “average” experience-the book is either fantastic or so bad I can’t finish.
Thankfully this book is truly one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a very, very long time.
The characters are very well developed, the location is as enchanting as it is terrifying,
It’s clever, thoughtful, relatable, scary, and suspenseful.
The dual timeline approach works very well here.
Beautifully narrated and very well written.
Loved the ending as well-certainly worth a credit.

Meh
Revisado: 12-29-24
This book has many things going for it and grabs you immediately.
The story is pretty gripping and engaging.
Imogen Church (as always) delivers an expert rendering of these characters.
But, as things go on, it gets more and more far fetched. I’m not one for completely fantastical/folklore driven tales. This became more like a warped fairy tale as things progressed and it just wasn’t for me.
Still a solid read but I won’t be giving this one a second listen.
