Historia
When Kyle Wimberly, the hands-on president of Full Cycle Solar, Inc., investigates a unit failure, he finds an alien shuttle has crashed into it. The shuttle's captain is grievously injured, his crew dead. Then, to Kyle's surprise, the captain asks for help, speaking perfect English. Kyle and colleague Alexandra Reyes carry the captain to the shuttle's medical bay for treatment by its auto-doc. This simple act of compassion launches the two down a path that will change their lives and the world forever.

Intriguing Human and Alien Comparisons
Revisado: 04-27-25
I wish the story was written better because I found the plot and certain elements of the novel well written. First contact with a compassionate alien species that may be friendly and acknowledging some political realities kept left me intrigued. However, character development is weak and though the author makes an attempt at inclusivity, sometimes the story sounded like a male nerd fantasy. But that’s not unusual for space sci-fi written by men, so I can tolerate it—just don’t love it. The narration is good.

Interesting characters
Revisado: 04-12-25
I appreciated the plot and the sci fi elements, and the character development was excellent. As soon as it was finished, I came back to Audible to find the next book in the series-the ending certainly implies there will be one-but there isn't one, at least not yet.
The narrator is a good voice actor and I could distinguish the characters' voices. That said, I found his voice to be irritating in general. It wasn't so bad that I stopped listening or that I wouldn't listen to the next book if it had the same narrator, but it took awhile for me stop noticing my irritation.

Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Starts great but gets bogged down toward the end
Revisado: 11-22-24
I don't usually enjoy stories narrated by a full cast because it seems harder for me to keep up with the characters that way than when there's a single narrator. For some reason, I rarely had trouble doing so with this story, and the voice actors did a great job and/or were well-chosen. The plot, while not unique, was intriguing and the mystery at the heart of it was highly compelling! For the first half I was already regretting that the story wouldn't last very long.
However, the plot gets bogged down later with details that really don't seem necessary to me. And then it became predictable. When the story was done, I was mostly disappointed that the author didn't make different choices, but not sorry it was over.

Entertaining
Revisado: 10-26-24
I enjoyed this book. It kept my attention and the characters were entertaining, especially their interactions. The narration was okay, but it was difficult to distinguish which character was talking unless they had heavy accents. This could be the fault of the author--maybe the "voice" of the English speaking characters weren't very discernible. But overall, good, light fare.

Historia
With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through.

A lovely novel on learning from one another
Revisado: 09-29-24
I really enjoyed this novel. It was an easy and entertaining listen about characters with disparate histories and needs who learn from one another during an unexpected event. It makes plain the value of being open-minded, curious, and hospitable. The characters are interesting and well developed. When the story was over, I felt a bit sad because I wanted to continue with them on their own journeys even longer than the epilogue allowed.
If you're looking for action and good guys vs. bad guys drama, take a pass on this novel. But if you desire a break from the real world of polarization and hate--without pretending that conflict doesn't exist--this story will feed your soul.

For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

Perfect narration of a lovely story
Revisado: 08-25-24
My sci-fi tastes lean heavily toward stories about space or time travel and away from fantasy, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was as if I, too, was experiencing the comfort the protagonist found in his role as a butler as I listened to the story. The story was a lovely break from the action and conflict of my typical “listens”.
Narration was absolutely perfect. You know it’s good when you forget that there’s only on person voicing all of the characters because you never struggle to figure out who the speaker is!

Historia
When former soldier Everett Cole signed on to help colony planets prepare for joining the Federation, his employers were disconcertingly vague about their identity and his duties. Yet, the pay was good, and it got him off Earth and on the way to a fresh start. More reservations arose when, 11 light-years from Earth, he met his partner, Edgar Millen, an enigmatic man with a penchant for violent solutions and a fetish for the mythology and language of the American Wild West.

A fun read!
Revisado: 07-03-24
I enjoy Thorensen's sci-fi novels. They aren't heavy on the science, but his characters are interesting, he writes well enough, and the plots are reasonably entertaining. Like the Destiny's Crucible series, A Tangled Road to Justice reads like a 20th century man's fantasy and they are rife with gender stereotypes from that time. But I only winced when I came across them and wasn't offended enough to stop listening. The narrator did a good job, but I was puzzled about the accents. It didn't make sense to me that people who grew up far away from earth would retain accents typical of their earthly nationality--a local accent would be dominant, i think. But overall, a fun read!

Most slum kids never go far, certainly not becoming a level 10 linesman like Ean. Interesting concept
Revisado: 03-02-24
Unique concept, but the writing was so so. It was difficult to keep people, ships, alliances, and lines straight. Might have been less convoluted if I’d read it rather than listened to the recording. Voice actors did a superb job of individuating the characters and handled male and female voices well.

Intriguing if a bit convoluted
Revisado: 02-20-24
I enjoyed the plot and the characters, and I really appreciate female-led storylines in sci-fi because they are so rare. I did not appreciate the complexity of the setting (multiple worlds) because it was overdone for my preferences. I get that the author wants to set up a series, but the investment in learning these worlds wasn’t worth while for me.
The writing was okay and the voice actor did a fine job. I wish the characters had been more interesting. They seemed two dimensional. But no regrets. I just don’t want to follow along to the next book, which was set up at the end.
