I think the narration could be a little more animated. The copyright narration at the end had more inflections than the book summary.

It fell flat after a promising start from the first book

I just finished the book and I have to admit that I could have just stopped listening halfway through. As other reviewers noted, the big plot/mission of the book became too evident very early in this book so that at the end, it just felt like a relief when it was “revealed”. The story and character development didn’t feel as polished as the first book. I first found the author in his reckoned series. I loved the reckoner series and I was happy to that the series didn’t get dragged out and ended it at a good pace. His Oathbringer series wasn’t as engaging for me and I stopped listening after 8 hours into the first book of the series. I stopped listening to Brandon for a few years so I was excited to see a new series from him. But now I hope he gets the same editor from the reckoners, otherwise I will probably have to find another scifi writer. Or hope that the BoBiverse author writers another home run

Worst follow up possible. This whole book is 100% cringe

The have to be the worst follow up to any story I have ever heard on audible.
The characters judgement went off the side of a cliff and it was just surprising how dumb all the characters had become.

After the exiled villain from the first story killed a village, turn another into monsters and tried killing them all the wizards, SOMEHOW convinced people to give them another chance and give him his powers back.

A wizard in this second chapter gave his lover servant powers and was letting him plot a murder "because he was so cute going through his plans". I was literally cringing the whole second book until I had to stop myself from the cringe fest. The enjoyment fr the first book kind of force me to keep going much longer on the second than I wanted to. I am 100% getting a refund on this.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This has some great content and the author does a good job reading and makes it easy to connect her personal experience with the content. HOWEVER... there are two chapters which are extremely annoying and almost take over the great content and leave me with a overall negative impression.

First chapter that was extremely annoying was the Rosa Parks chapter. While it was a great "story" and a catalyst for a necessary movement, it wasn't anything that was a "spur of the movement" 5 second decision. Rosa Parks sit down was a plant that was a set up because the original black lady who did it, Claudette Colvin, was "too black for white people to support". So using a fake plant story that perpetuates a popular lie and takes credit away from Claudette Colvin somewhat discredits your whole chapter on it. So thank you for being part of the hype machine that continues to NOT give ANY credit to Claudette Colvin. I got through a few minutes of her Rosa Parks chapter before I decided to skip her fake 5 second case illustration.

Here is the true story, in a funny way.

Lastly, I understand making emotional connections with your products (5 second rule) and your audience creates a longer bond and has a higher chance to connect with them on a more meaningful. Deep emotional connections create listeners and consumers of Mel Robbins for life. That being said, the last chapter of her fake talking crying was almost unbearable and impossible to get through. I work in entertainment so I had seen my fair share of awful fake crying. Her emotional injections on the sad stories at the end about regret were just plain awful. Although research shows that emotional loss is better connector to people's emotions (aka their wallets) I wish she would revise and take out her fake cry talk at the end and end the audio with the positive and uplifting approach she started with.

She by all means might actually sound like a fake crier when she cry talks at the end, but in this case, it is just literally the worst thing I heard this year. By all means get the audible version but do yourself a favor and skip both of those chapters, just terrible editorial and performance content.

The most popular critical amazon review is very accurate when he/she says this book should really be blog post long and a great 15 min audible pump up video.

I will return this and wait for a summary book.
