Too many characters
Revisado: 12-12-23
This wasn’t nearly as good as her others. The plot was complex, and sometimes made little sense. The entire title premise wasn’t satisfactorily explained. I was disappointed in this one.

Historia
“Sharks are as timid as rabbits,” says a superintendent of the Coast Guard, dismissing the possibility that a shark could be the culprit in an unprecedented fatal attack at the Jersey Shore. It’s July, and swimming in the sea is a popular new pastime, but people up and down the East Coast are shocked and mystified by the swimmer’s death. A prominent surgeon at the shore, Dr. Edwin Halsey is the one who examines the victim, and the only one who believes the perpetrator was a shark—and that it will strike again.

A Misguided Homage To Jaws
Revisado: 05-23-23
I was excited for this book. As a student of sharks I eagerly devour everything I can find in the genre. This was a huge disappointment and looks like the author uploaded the novel JAWS to ChatGPT and this, with a few select edits and rewrites, it the final draft. This could have been an exciting book. Alas, it’s a boring ripoff.

Historia
In late March 1944, as Stalin’s forces push into Ukraine, young Emil and Adeline Martel must make a terrible decision: Do they wait for the Soviet bear’s intrusion and risk being sent to Siberia? Or do they reluctantly follow the wolves - murderous Nazi officers who have pledged to protect “pure-blood” Germans? The Martels are one of many families of German heritage whose ancestors have farmed in Ukraine for more than a century.

It’s about God
Revisado: 08-20-21
This was a good book, at least the first third, then it digressed the continued importance of all things God. Lectures, more like sermons focused on the ‘almighty’ dominate the last half of this book, at least until the last 3 hours when I just couldn’t take it anymore. If you are Uber~religious you will love it. For those of us who are not it will be hard to bear. Too bad. I really wanted to love it.

Historia
Our world has ended five times: It has been broiled, frozen, poison gassed, smothered, and pelted by asteroids. In The Ends of the World, Peter Brannen dives into deep time, exploring Earth's past dead ends, and in the process offers us a glimpse of our possible future. Many scientists now believe that the climate shifts of the 21st century have analogs in these five extinctions.

It was a little wonky but still good
Revisado: 10-13-19
I enjoyed this book, but my degree isn’t in paleontology so at times I struggled with the technical and scientific jargon, which could be a little thick. As a result I tended to zone out during the ‘lectures’ and retrieving my more active mind when the conversation turned to something I could actually embrace. In my opinion the final chapter was the most embraceable in terms of understanding. Of course the earlier chapters did build upon it. In conclusion, I can recommend this book as it is scientifically predictive, and, at times frightening for just that reason.

Historia
In 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by 16 suitcases and a red hatbox. The suitcases contained all manner of paraphernalia: medals, gems, two cigar cutters, silk underwear, a hot water bottle, and the equivalent of $100,000,000 in cash. Hidden in a coffee can, a set of brass vials housed glass capsules containing a clear liquid and a white precipitate: potassium cyanide. Joining Göring in the detention center were the elite of the captured Nazi regime....

Thought Provoking and Fascinating Historical Story
Revisado: 07-24-19
What a historic listen, and one I could hardly turn it off. As a student of that era I can say unequivocally, that the history is accurate, and the performance was stellar. I recommend this book.

Historia
Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death. In 1864, Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave inspires his men to take action.

It's About Killing Seals
Revisado: 07-24-19
I so wanted to love this book, but the relentless and in-depth descriptions of killing seals, and birds, was just too much. I would wager that more than half of the book is devoted to this task, and, as an animal lover, I was saddened by it, and even those who don't like animals, or are ambivalent, will be turned off by the author's storyline, which belies the title of the book. I cannot recommend it.

Historia
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history. A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another....

Extraordinary Book
Revisado: 07-24-19
I've nothing to say about this book, other than it's one of the best I've listened to for some time. As a student of that era, I can say, without reservation, that the history is flawless; the narration without challenge, and the story exceptional. I will likely listen to this marvelous book again and again. I recommend it most vigorously.

Historia
I'm a 64-year-old retired lawyer and former Assistant Attorney General with an unusual story to tell. Every word of it is true. It happened in a state park known as Devil's Den. For fear of losing my job and damaging my reputation in the legal community, I never spoke about the incident. If it hadn't happened to me, I'd be skeptical too. In 1977, I was an active duty NCO in the USAF. A friend and I planned a two-night camping trip to explore the wilderness. We drove deep into the forest until we came to a high plateau. There on the horizon sat a perfect triangle of three very bright stars....

What a Tedious Listen
Revisado: 07-24-19
OK. I rarely stop listening to books until the book is actually finished, but this one belongs to the 'rarely.' The author was being chased by aliens from his days as a kid, and fast-forwarding to adulthood. It stretches the imagination to the point where it's almost comedic, particularly to alien sighting about 50, and I'm approximating as it seems the author is seeing aliens or their ships almost every day. What turned me off completely was the nonsense about the Air Force's OSI using some form of injected "truth serum" to extract information from Mr. Lovelace. As a former member of military intelligence I can say, without reservation, the military doesn't inject service members in order to gain intelligence. Oddly, I wanted to stop listening to this book about 20 minutes in, but I hung in there, waiting for something, anything to happen beyond the silliness expressed by the author as truth. That didn't happen and I finally turned it off, about 30 minutes from the end. I just couldn't take it anymore. This isn't non-fiction, it's BS, and, as a believer in life on other worlds, I was disappointed.
