Time is precious. The world is waiting. Rediscover yourself. The Great Alone is the epic adventure of a relatable explorer. Why does a 44-year-old father leave his family for six months to walk 4,286 km across America on the Pacific Crest Trail? What effect does it have on his marriage? on his children? and on himself? Following his intuition, Tim Voors decided to embark on a life-changing hike, feeling alive, being afraid, pushing through pain, confronting emptiness and starting a passionate romance with the wilderness.

The use of AI was ok. But, AI narration doesn’t capture the story at its fullest potential. Otherwise, I enjoyed the storytelling of this epic adventure and the keen insight of a thru hike of one of Americas beautiful long trails.

At the trail’s mercy from day one, the two hikers face the endless pains of walking, rising tensions, and falling behind to the coming winter.

Arguably the greatest extreme skier to ever live, Doug Coombs pioneered hundreds of first descents down the biggest, steepest, most dangerous mountains in the world - from the Grand Teton "Otter Body" in Jackson Hole; to Mount Vinson, the highest point in Antarctica; to far-flung drops such as Wyatt Peak in Kyrgyzstan. He graced magazine covers, wowed moviegoers, became the face of top ski companies, and ascended as the king of big-mountain extreme skiing.

Totally Enjoyed It.
Revisado: 04-19-21
This book came as a recommendation because I love the outdoors. I’m a backpacker and enjoy books about my hobby. This one was not about my hobby and I hesitated listening to it. However, I’m so glad I did. The story of Doug Coombs and the writing of Robert Cocuzzo about his hero is the best tribute to Doug.
I liked that Robert actually steps in the footsteps of his hero to tell the story of a man who was worthy of his words. I was pleasantly surprised that this book was a teal page turner for me. I could tell that at the telling of the story that even the narrator was emotional at the telling of Doug’s death. Great story in its writing and in its narration. A must read, even if your not aware of this great man for whom this book pays tribute to.

Historia
Like a well-crafted stage play, Just Passin' Thru delivers one suspenseful scene after another. But in this historic setting a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings the characters who show up are no fictional creations. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and that’s enough), and some appear again and again. But all are united by two things: the author’s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

Great collection of stories
Revisado: 04-02-21
I really did enjoy the stories and all the characters. It took me a little bit to get used to the sometime monotone, robotic tone of the narration and appreciated the inflection of his voice when needed. I even more appreciated when the narrated gave individual character traits as the characters were described. That really made the stories come to life. Thank you Winton Porter for bringing true life characters from the trail to us and sharing tour experiences.

Historia
In Journeys North, legendary trail angel, thru hiker, and former PCTA board member Barney Scout Mann spins a compelling tale of six hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in 2007 as they walk from Mexico to Canada. This ensemble story unfolds as these half-dozen hikers - including Barney and his wife, Sandy - trod north, slowly forming relationships and revealing their deepest secrets and aspirations. They face a once-in-a-generation drought and early severe winter storms that test their will in this bare-knuckled adventure.

I’ve listened to almost every book that has been written by hiking enthusiasts. This is top knot has. I’ll recommend you give it a listen because it will draw you in. The narration was done well and the expressions were greatly appreciated. You couldn’t have picked a better narrator to tell your story. Just one small note; I found using an Englishmen at the end to tell Pockets/Rockets story not believable. Not that I didn’t believe it, just that the diction should have been with an American accent. Just my two cents and hardly worth that. Otherwise, TOTALLY ENJOYABLE.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

A story that is not taught in school. This book is an eye-opener as to how anti-semitism was handled in America during its rise in Germany. Arneaux is an unsung hero of the Jewish community of America. I enjoyed learning about this small part of history.
