Excellent!
Revisado: 11-28-20
I've read a few space operas this year and The Burning Son is definitely one of my favorites so far! It's got a lot of action, a ragtag set of characters, and just a really good flow. Basically everything you could wish for in a space opera! Plus it's got all of those traditional elements you expect in a space opera, but it's fresh enough to feel new and not a carbon copy of a standard space opera.
This book also definitely really worked as an audiobook. There was so much clever dialogue throughout the story that it was such a great experience to read this story as an audiobook. It in a sense helped these characters come to life and helped enhance all of the races and locations in the book.
This was an excellent start to a new series and I really look forward to seeing where these books lead. I also look forward to learning more about the characters and maybe meeting some new alien races along the way. But yeah, this was a fun read and reading in audiobook format really helped me along. I find that sometimes I struggle with reading space operas because I get so caught up in the words and taking a step back and listening to the story really helped me to enjoy it even more.

It Will Draw You In!
Revisado: 11-08-20
This book is so unexpectedly beautiful. It is a romance but neglects all of the typical tropes to give us something fresh and new. And it's amazing in that you probably won't love the main characters but you will still be invested in their lives and choices made. And the book is just so expertly woven that you won't want to set it down (or stop listening in my case).
I really loved and hated these characters at the same time. Both Beau and Amanda were hard to love and made some pretty terrible life choices, but I couldn't help but love them for that. They were perfect in their imperfections and that's what made these characters so realistic. We've all made mistakes in life and sometimes they haunt us, trailing behind like an unfriendly ghost.
Since I listened to this in audiobook form I want to take a moment to talk about how much I enjoyed reading this book as an audiobook. The narration fit the story splendidly and it really brought this story to life. And all in all I was really invested in what might happen to the characters and seeing their lives unfold.

Amazing!
Revisado: 10-16-20
It's audiobook time! And I just KNEW that this was going to be an amazing one to listen to! This story was everything I wanted it to be and I was pulled even further into it by listening to this wonderful narration. It's dark (teehee, I HAD to eek that in somewhere!), gritty, and sometimes a little spooky. And it was just the right mixture of fantasy and science fiction to fit my extremely niche adoration of this power genre combo.
I think this is my first male narrator (this might be a full on fib, my memory is terrible), and I really enjoyed the change in style that comes with a male narrator. I find that I'm extremely picky with female narrator voices and oftentimes want to speed them up, but I didn't feel that way with this one. And the narration tied in with the subject of the book was absolutely perfect! This is just one of those stories that screams "read me aloud!"
Outside of the narration, however, I really just enjoyed the heck out of this book. Like I mentioned above I tend to love books that don't necessarily fit into either the fantasy or the sci-fi genre and instead are almost a combination of the two. It tends to be that perfect pairing for me that always leaves me satisfied. It was a truly unique and interesting story that I look forward to continuing.

Sebastian and Melissa would never forget their arrival at the house called Hadlows. The long drive through the neglected park and woodland, the lake glimpsed through trees, the house, with its "thousand windows" looking down on them and the great hall, empty but for the portraits covering the walls. Hadlows held a secret, of that they were sure.

Such an Enjoyable Read!
Revisado: 10-11-20
I'm back and with more Sebastian and Melissa! The House Called Hadlows is the second book in this delightful series and I am continuing to fall in love with these books. There is a soft spot in my heart for classic children's books and the magic that they always seem to have within. Plus there's something just so relaxing/home-y about books like these!
This is one of those books that you read and read again because you feel like you're going home. The story is filled with adventure and magic and plenty of classic elements, but it will still stand out and survive in your memory (much like Narnia persists today). And while this story may not lead you to extensive literary discussions, it is one that will just cause pure enjoyment. And that's something that I think we all need right now. A chance to indulge in a little of our childhood.
As with the first book I absolutely loved reading this book as an audiobook. There's something just so perfect about audiobooks and classic children's stories. Especially when I love the narrator and could listen to her all day. This series just begs for you to curl up on a couch and get all cozy as you enter its unique world.

Historia
Julia and Charley may come from two completely different worlds, but they’ve been called the same names all their lives. Psycho. Liar. Witch. It’s the price of being a supernaturally gifted female in sexist, narrow-minded 1971. Until they’re invited to join the Stanford Research Institute. There, a team of scientists are conducting experiments on people like them - people with the ability to tell the future, read minds, move objects without lifting a finger. At first, the institute seems like a safe haven.

LOVED This One!
Revisado: 10-11-20
You guys! This book is just the gift that keeps on giving! Not only is it narrated splendidly, but it's also such an amazing story! AND it's set in the 70s, which is one of my all time favorite time periods! It's the time of love, peace, and human experiments? Well, that's what it is in this book. Following our two main characters as they navigate a place that makes it seem like they can finally be themselves. Or can they?
This book came at a really great time for me because I actually just took a course on human research a few semesters ago. And with that comes lots of time looking at how people have been exploited throughout history. And even before this course (and book) it has been a topic of great importance/interest to me. Plus this one is about psychics, and that's always an immediate place it in the "must read" pile for me! And after reading this book I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! There were so many great moments and interesting plot twists and turns!
Now, since I read this book as an audiobook I want to take some time to applaud the narrator. I think listening to this story added some depth to the characters as it added another sense to the story. Because this is a fast paced book some of those additional details got lost, but when you're listening to it it just makes sense.; Plus I just really enjoyed this narrator as a whole, I found that I could listen to her for long stretches without getting exasperated or losing my focus.

Need the Next One Now!
Revisado: 10-04-20
I'm back with book two of the Emma Griffin FBI series, and dare I say it? I think our little Emma is maturing a bit! The first book our main character was lacking some much needed common sense to be taken seriously as an FBI agent, and I found that this book improved on that! I like that this series is taking us through some character development as we get a brand new case on top of that!
I am glad to say that the narrator remained the same between the first book and the second. I mean, it makes sense to keep the same one for a series and would be quite jarring if they hadn't. But I'm also just really glad because I think that she does a phenomenal job and is perfect for this series! And I stay true to my original claim that a crime driven plot is the PERFECT book to read in audiobook form. It's like being read a scary bed time story and that makes my morbid self quite happy! Especially with spooky season upon us!
Now, I found this book slightly less "scary" than the first one (not that I really find either scary per-say, I just know other people will). And while that mildly makes me sad, Rivers does make up for it by further development in other areas. So each book has it's positives and seeing how this series is evolving just makes me want to continue it even more so! So I'm excited to see what comes next and what new changes/adaptations I might see!

Just the Magic I Needed!
Revisado: 10-03-20
This was such a fun, magical, and fast-paced read! Or should I say listen, since I did the audiobook version of the book? Plus that cover! It's just so pretty and so spooky and so edgy but classic! I'm a smidge of a cover snob, so I can't help but talk about the ones I really love. And the book was so fun and the characters were so amazing!
I actually love that this book was set in Canada! I can't even remember the last book I read that was set in Canada! But even though this is a fantasy book the setting still worked, so don't worry! It's a modern story of magic, and while it's modern it's also a bit gritty and urban. And I've really been into academy type of books lately, so this was just the perfect addition to my TBR! While this book starts off a smidge slow to set the scene, the action/pace quickly and continues to pick up throughout until the very end.
The narration on this story was really good and it was perfect for speeding up! I like to speed up my audiobooks at least slightly, but sometimes the voices get a bit too distorted when I do so. But this one translated really well that way. BUT, on a similar note I don't think I would be able to listen to this one at the normal speed. It was just a smidge too slow for me to not go a little stir crazy if I had tried. But like I said, I still loved the narration at my chosen speed!

A Truly Delightful Story!
Revisado: 10-01-20
Gah! Why have I not read this book before?! How has it evaded me! But it must've been meant for me to listen to the audiobook of this one, because it's honestly the perfect book to have narrated to you. It is truly the perfect book to snuggle up under some blankets with a hot cocoa (or a PSL given the season) and a chill in the air as you listen to this delightful audiobook. I know that probably sounds cheesy but it's just one of those books that gives you nostalgia for childhood and demands that level of comfort.
So I know I'm new to audiobooks, but this one has been the best one yet! It was equal parts the delightfully vivid story and the perfect narrator. And I might be just a sucker for a British accent, but I just found it so soothing and almost whimsical to listen to. Which fit perfectly into the magic of this story. The fact that this book is geared towards a younger audience also makes listening to it make that much more sense. This is a story that you could easily find yourself reading aloud to kids and getting the chance to have it read aloud to you as an adult makes it even more exciting.
The one thing I love about this book was how lush and whimsical the writing is. This is a classic children's book and I've always been particularly fond of them, so I just knew that this would be a new addition to my favorites pile. It's one of those books you can pick up time and time again and thoroughly enjoy it all over again.

An Interesting Listen!
Revisado: 09-28-20
This is the perfect book for an audiobook! I mean, it is spooky season, and thriller/crime books are obviously a must, and listening to them on audiobook just amps it up a level. I mean why read about killers when you can listen to stories about them (and I mean, with everyone's obsession with true crime podcasts audiobooks are clearly the next step).
Now, this was an extremely enjoyable book, but there were some things that had me hesitating. Mostly it was our main characters.... lack of almost common sense? And for an FBI agent that is almost certainly an accident waiting to happen. BUT, that also meant that there was plenty of drama on top of the already wild plot. So, while it was a slight drawback I still wildly enjoyed this story. So stick with this one because it does get intense and wild a few chapters in and your mind will be working through all of the clues throughout the book!
Since this is a series I cannot wait to dive into book two! I'm especially looking forward to how/if Emma develops throughout the next installment! But if you're in the mood for a crime story that you can just sit back and enjoy then this is a great selection! So kick back with all the spooky season comforts and get ready to try and solve a murder case!

Can't Wait to Continue!
Revisado: 09-28-20
Is this book basically a YA retelling of Frozen? Yes, yes it is. And I am not mad about that at all. It's kind of everything that I, an adult, wanted from the movie (even though I still love the movie). I was also worried at how well I would follow along with a fantasy on audiobook, but I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed it!
I am fairly new to the audiobook world, but since this was my year of diversifying my reading I've been really excited to expand on how I read my books. Working from home I've been needing some way to work while also not going stir crazy, and audiobooks seem to be the perfect solution! And, like I mentioned, I was a little nervous about taking on a fantasy through audiobook. While it is my favorite genre, even reading a fantasy in a physical book can sometimes be difficult to keep up with. But this audiobook did not disappoint and the narrator really kept my focus even when I was multitasking!
Overall I really enjoyed this story. The sisters each had to go through difficult trials throughout and I am looking forward to where they go from here. Since this is a trilogy I will definitely be continuing on because I am definitely hooked by this world and this family!
