I loved listening to this book. Gold did a phenomenal job narrating. I felt like every character had a unique voice that fit them. Brady and Zach's journey from finding each other in the clearing to their happily ever after had my headphones riveted to my ears. My only disappointment is that the book had to end.

Considering this is the third book in a series, you might want to give the first two, Raybearer and Redemptor, a listen if you haven't already. Otherwise, I highly recommend this audiobook.

This was my second venture into African fiction and my only qualm is that I didn't realize until the last hour of listening that this was the third book in The Raybearer Series! No worries, I'm definitely adding the first two to my reading list after listening to The Maid and the Crocodile.

Ifueko has done a sublime job of rendering Oluwan City and it's citizens. The struggle between the different echelons of society in Oluwan was a brilliant build up throughout the book that I did not expect. Listening to Sade grow into the woman I like to think Mama Sade would have been proud of after being beaten into "her place" drew the whole story together.

Thomas has a wonderfully calm voice, perfect for storytelling.

I've got two pieces of feedback for Thomas, if that's ok, and by no means are they showstoppers (so if you're not Thomas, you can stop reading here and just get the audiobook). Sometimes your cadence is halting, like you aren't sure of what will come next, and you seem to drop the African affectation/accent you're using for most characters when you do male voices. That being said, you've got a great voice, and I look forward to listening to you grow more.

All in all, a lovely experience, and again, I look forward to more from both Ifueko and Thomas!

What does it mean to be human?

Come along with Addie LaRue as she discovers the answers to this fundamental question of life. Heartbreak, love, hate, sorrow, cunning, and connection, all spring up like bubbles in champagne in this beautiful story following the winding life of Addie from the quiet countryside of France in 1714 to the bustling streets of New York City in 2014. Never make a deal with the devil, but if you do, have your cards ready to win.

From cold anger to desperate need to exhausted hellos and righteous destruction, Whelan knows exactly how to narrate this wonderful story. Cannot recommend more.

Whether it is classified as one or not, this book seemed to have the bones of a murder mystery. That being said, it was *not* a murder mystery. It picked those bones up, dusted them off, and layered on a gloriously fleshed out story that had me second guessing what I thought it was every 5 minutes. Muir's wit and wordplay had me laughing almost as often. Quirk was wonderful to listen to and embodied the characters she voiced to the bone. I'm 1000% invested in this story and 1000% not sorry about the bone puns.

At first I was thrown by the narrator's voice, not the accent really, but the inflections(?) that seemed to accompany almost all of the sentences. It seemed like he was trying too hard to pump emotion into every word, even when it wasn't really warranted. However, I acclimated after an hour or so of listening and enjoyed the story for the content, even coming to enjoy Leslie's narrative style at times.

I didn't realize there would be actively described sex scenes, but I think Alderson did a good job of weaving them in without detracting from the rest of the story. It did NOT read like a smutt story from your favorite porn site, lol. I'm currently debating on going to the next book in the series, but I think whether I do it soon or not, I will return to this series at some point.

Thank you Mr. Alderson for writing a fantasy story with queer characters, even if some are not exactly model citizens. 😅 This has been my first real dip into the queer representation side of fiction books, and it's definitely left me with a desire for more. 💚
