Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Historia
Nell McDaragh never knew her grandfather, the celebrated Irish poet Phil McDaragh. But his love poems seem to speak directly to her. Restless and wryly self-assured, at twenty-two Nell leaves her mother Carmel’s orderly home to find her own voice as a writer (mostly online, ghost-blogging for an influencer) and to live a poetical life. As she chases obsessive love, damage, and transcendence, in Dublin and beyond, her grandfather’s poetry seems to guide her home.

Too dark for me
Revisado: 03-03-24
The writing in this book is absolutely gorgeous. But for me, the story was just too sad. And it’s not like I’m a Hallmark movie fan, lol! I usually prefer the realistic to the sappy. But this one was just a bit too realistic for me. The creepy patriarch, the abuse the young woman seeks out and endures, the mom’s negativity- just a downer. I stuck with it until the end but would not recommend.

Historia
An unprecedented historical and literary event, this tale written in the 1850s is the only known novel by a female African American slave, and quite possibly the first novel written by a black woman anywhere. A work recently uncovered by renowned scholar and professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., it is a stirring tale of "passing" and the adventures of a young slave as she makes her way to freedom.

Amazing story- so glad I listened
Revisado: 02-21-24
The narrator is unbelievably bad, but the story so good I willingly stuck with it! I sure wish they’d re-record this with a competent narrator. The novel deserves so much better! Definitely recommend, despite the poor narrator.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Such a lovely story
Revisado: 01-20-24
I loved the story and the characters. It’s the kind of book that is uplifting, and the kind of book you don’t want to end. It’s a sweet story, but somehow the author manages to make the characters realistic.
The narrator who reads the part of the octopus is fantastic! The other narrator is OK. Not my favorite, but certainly not bad. Maybe she just pales in comparison to the octopus!
Overall, a great listen!

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Such a good story and so beautifully performed. While I thought the characters weren’t the most realistic I’ve encountered, I didn’t care. I hated for the book to end!

Great story but took all I had to stick with it because the narrator was so bad. She ruined a lot of lovely language with her attempts to sound like…I don’t know what!
