As good as I remember, better even with Stephen Fry’s narration. Wonderful plot and great new characters.

Pretty typical Bosch. Maybe a bit better than the average. Dick Hill is a solid narrator.

Some great moments in this one. While the method and the murderer weren’t too hard to guess, one can only surmise the motive, based in historical factors. But the reason I love Cadfael is more because of the characters and measured writing anyway. Patrick Tull is one of the best. Sometimes I forget he’s the only one narrating because he so naturally switches between characters.

This is only my second in the series, but I think I have found a new favorite mystery. Excellent writing, excellent characters. I love the setting. And Patrick Tull as narrator is the crème de la crème.

Stephen Fry’s collection and reimagining of Greek myths is always enlightening and never boring. The perfect narrator as well.

It’s hard to put a finger on what drug this down the most: the story, the writing, or the narration. I would put the biggest blame on the narrator, but honestly I’ve not read a lot of Grisham before this. I enjoyed the other novel and the movies I’ve seen much better. But this plot was thin. The characters were annoying. Perhaps they weren’t as bad as the narrator made them seem, but I suspect they just weren’t that likable anyway. I wonder, too, if Grisham isn’t experienced in writing about murder, at least serial killers. There wasn’t any court room drama. So I don’t think this was one of his better novels. It felt like he was phoning it in or had writer’s block, or maybe his craft has been overstated. I was not impressed. I’ve also enjoyed the actor’s other work better, but her characters here were pretty flat and seemed to just reflect her own personality. The delivery was pretty awful as well. She has a bad habit of upspeaking (raising her voice like in a question at the end of a declarative sentence) and it gets old fast. I should have quit at the beginning but Audible wouldn’t let me return the book since I no longer have an active membership, I recommend you avoid the audiobook, but honestly the actual book probably isn’t much better.

I enjoyed this Jim Chee. Good mystery. I liked the social commentary as much or maybe more than usual. Hillerman has good insights into Navajo and White culture which are a good background for the story. Guidall is an excellent narrator as always.

The 3rd Harry Bosch

Third in the Bosch series. Probably my least fave so far. Since the plot involves a serial killer of sex workers, there is a lot of sexual content, and dark subject matter. Bosch is also involved in a trial, so the narrative switches back and forth between the case and the trial. Overall, I don’t think I preferred the changes. But it’s still Bosch and Connelly, so it was well-written, even if the plot didn’t seem quite as interesting for my taste. I also thought the narrator, Dick Hill, was a little weak. Many characters didn’t sound all that different. I especially didn’t care for his female voices. Overall, a decent story, but maybe not up to what I’ve come to expect.

The second Jim Chee mystery is another enjoyable one. George Guidall narrates and is excellent as usual. This is my second time reading the series but I can’t recall any of the details so perhaps I missed this one somehow. It relies a lot on Hopi myth and religion and some of the plot elements surrounding Hopi ceremonies remind me a bit of an earlier novel, but the greater mystery is quite different. Jim Chee is an enjoyable lead character and I appreciated the side characters in his new location, Captain Largo and Cowboy Dashee.

I loved the first Bosch book with Titus Welliver narrating. I think I enjoyed this book even more. The story was tight, plays into the noir setting and dialogue perfectly. The narrator, Dick Hill, was nearly as good as Welliver, and did some nice audio tricks when dialogue was across phone lines, police radio, etc., that gave the desired effect and helped you to really feel the setting. He had an excellent variety of character voices and accents as well. There were a few characters voices I didn’t love but that’s only because I’m used to the characters on the TV show, all of which Welliver mimics perfectly. But this narration was probably done long before the TV show. I will gladly read more Connelly novels and listen to books narrated by Dick Hill.
