Historia
To Rule the Waves tells the extraordinary story of how the British Royal Navy allowed one nation to rise to a level of power unprecedented in history. From the navy's beginnings under Henry VIII to the age of computer warfare and special ops, historian Arthur Herman tells the spellbinding tale of great battles at sea, heroic sailors, violent conflict, and personal tragedy - of the way one mighty institution forged a nation, an empire, and a new world.

Wide sweeping imminently-readable history covers more than naval history.

I enjoyed the focus not on the minutia of naval detail but on the extraordinary role of the British Navy in both the United Kingdom’s growth, but on world events. A genuinely pleasurable read.

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Highly Accessible Read of Medical History.
Revisado: 11-13-17
I gave one of my rare 5's to this book, not because of its overall literary greatness, but for delivering the rare engrossing read of medical history for the non-medical person. As others have said, the book is not for the squeamish, but one adjusts fairly swiftly. Not only is the history compelling but the historical characters are rendered in multidimensional form and are characters that you often root for. Even the people chronicled for refusal to accept new medical developments are portrayed as normal people and not villainous unenlightened scum.Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry.

Historia
The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

Amazed I'd not already read Carr's fine Alienist
Revisado: 11-13-17
I enjoy the time period (Golden Era/Victorian Era) and Sherlock Holmes-type mysteries, so I was surprised not to have already read this outstanding work. The enjoyment is not in figuring out who did it or why, but in the meticulous details, analysis and fine historical setting. One often hopes that a fictional work will provide history and a sense of the times, but one is usually a bit disappointed. It's a bit much to expect a fiction writer to teach a history symposium, but as a historian, Carr nicely gives you a feel for the people and times. Audible 20 review Sweepstakes Entry.

Historia
It was not common to awaken in a cloning vat streaked with drying blood. At least Maria Arena had never experienced it. She had no memory of how she died. That was also new; before, when she had awakened as a new clone, her first memory was of how she died. Maria's vat was in the front of six vats, each one holding the clone of a crew member of the starship Dormire, each clone waiting for its previous incarnation to die so it could awaken. And Maria wasn't the only one to die recently....

Almost never give a 5 - Thoughtful and Fun.
Revisado: 11-02-17
Lafferty combines thoughtful questions about the ethics of cloning, AIs, discrimination and faith into a fun romp.I hated putting the story down. Interesting that a often humorous book includes lot of violence, drama, and who done it, along with questions about the rights of clones, genetic manipulation, etc.

Historia
Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley, and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War.

They are simple phrases. They sound Christian - like something you might find in the Bible. We've all heard these words. Maybe we've said them. They capture some element of truth, yet they miss the point in important ways. Join Adam Hamilton in searching for the whole truth by comparing common Christian clichés to the message and ministry of Jesus.

Author thoughtfully explains why certain sayings have negatively influenced Christian thought and honestly explains why some of these sayings can be personally hurtful to others and to oneself. Found some application in my work when I deal with those who lost a loved one.

Disappointing-only makes you dislike movie more.
Revisado: 10-25-17
The movie for which the prequel is intended is too dark and unsatisfying. This prequel answers few, if any questions, and only makes you fond of characters with excellent back stories, only to cavalierly and swiftly kill them off in movie. Aliens' movies are supposed to be dark, but dark for a reason - not just maliciously and sadistically so.

I rarely give 5's so a 4 is high praise for me. This series is addictive and while not as innovative as say, old man's war, keeps your attention. The narrator is one of my favorites. Excellent military sci fi. Fun reads.

Not All Quiet on the Western Front but well worth the read.
Revisado: 06-28-17
This autobiographical work gives one a visceral sense of the frustrating and nightmarish life of the common soldier on the Eastern Front. It drags in places because tedium and being stuck in a never ending morass is a pretty good description of the Eastern Front. There was some debate as to the authenticity of the story but I researched the question and I agree that the story is authentic. This book augments more straightforward historical tomes and was especially interesting to me because I recently traveled these areas.

Historia
More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.

New spin on post apocalyptic work.
Revisado: 02-20-17
One sees themes from other of the author's post apocalyptic work but the setting of a post nuke war hell and the survivors in a few giant airships combines nice touches from his zombie and pandemic works with some of the elements of Hugh Howry's Wool. Word of warning ... this author's stories are bleak and the overall head count and death of good characters is rough for the reader.
