True horror should sour your stomach and cause you discomfort.

Black River Orchard is the first novel I have read from Chuck Wendig. I just ordered two more of his novels. From this novel, I am never going to look at apples the same way again. I happened to be eating on three separate occasions while consuming Wendig’s words. Each instance, my stomach flip flopped.

Well done, Mr. Wendig.

One thing I love about horror is the cycle of life and death. Horror is struggle. It’s a trial and a challenge. It’s also a means of forcing us to look at what we take for granted and gives us the opportunity to re-evaluate what we have and what we can do differently, if we make it through to the other end. The dark fantasy element is just what makes horror fun.

Side note, I appreciate the BDSM element used in one of his characters for Dark River Orchard. I think it lines up well with a person’s other character attributes that lend to adventure, challenge, and growth.

This character rings true to me, rather than other examples where that lifestyle is taken as a disparaging quality or punishable offense (like premarital sex and drugs from a Jason flick).

The main protagonist, Gus, I love his character. Natural, believable, with plenty of flaws, but one that steps off the pages.

Finally, bit of an upswing

A Decent Read

I liked the story. It is a good book, but it’s bleak. The performance and writing, all solid and worthy of praise. I gave average marks because of the character relationships it plays with and my inability to become truly invested in the characters. The story line has depth; just not my table today….

Comedy Troupe with Clever Writing

If you are looking for horror, this is not the series for you, However, if you love the genre and also love comedy and entertainment, this makes for the perfect podcast.

This series is based in the 70’s in England about a two-man team of ghost hunters. One is the brains and the other is similar to a brawler version of Austin Powers. It all comes together well and it keeps me coming back.

Normally, podcasts aren’t my thing, but I find myself spending hours at a time listening to one episode after another.

The storylines are light and entertaining. The characters are always performed with high quality. The writing is witty. The humor and turn of phrase keeps me amused in the least. I find myself laughing when the lines really hit home.

I’m always entertained with the author commentary at the end of each performance. It’s informative and still entertaining.

Sadly, I don’t see many reviews on Audible for this podcast. I would expect to see many more that appreciate the humor and work done by these guys.

I’m hooked on this series. Normally, I go through 2-3 books a week. Rarely do I go back to enjoy the good ones.

I come back to revisit the previous books, just to enjoy the characters and world.

Truly a top tier addition to He Who Fights with Monsters.

All progress on my other books stopped with a record scratch. I hit gold choosing this series.

I looked at the total duration and thought “+50 hours… this is either going to be an quick ten minute quitter or an entire workweek of listening.” If I commit, it’s not going to be because I want to get the most of my money from the purchase of this book.

It’s fairly quick-paced series. Author, Bobby Adair passes the smell test for me when it comes to technical details he uses to the extent they are relevant. Adair doesn’t geek out with the survivalist details throughout the story, but he has a good enough imagination to make it enjoyable, invested, and paints a believable reality to make you think about what you would do. He employs common and likely obstacles for the challenges his characters face on their path.

The cover art is off putting. Is it accurate? Yes, to a slim slice of the story I’m reading. The cover delivered an impression to me that placed the buy meter just south of neutral.

This series reached me at just the right time in my life. Attitude, self-control, the joys between compromise and selfishness, the struggle of living with a hero complex… Mr. Adair hit home with at least one more in his target audience.

The author uses his characters to hint toward a deeper meaning and insight that comes with change, albeit, a huge leap of fantasy (COVID, we’re not impressed) to the societal ripple effects for survivors is interesting. In comparison to Max Brooks’ “World War Z”, Slow Burn is not as deep on communal strategies for survival , nor does it have the range of perspective from eclectic, but ingenious, viewpoints on the apocalypse; however, it does touch on the individual archetypes we can all relate to easily. Slow Burn is a familiar but different flavor and rich with taste, texture, and sensation.

The characters are believable and I’m still here, +30 hours into the ride and it saddens me each time I see the time I have left to enjoy this journey.

A must read for those wanting to improve culture through leadership

This should be a must read for anyone heading into a position where they are responsible for results or meeting unreachable expectations.

The points given are sound and relatable. The cost in personal energy, time, and level of commitment is truly understated in this book, but it’s already a given that leadership is hard.

Some wonderful characters

The characters are terrific. Anyone who has had a problem with addiction may be able to relate to some characters better than others.

I love maberry’s work. Perhaps my expectation of his joe ledger series has colored my hopes for this book. It’s a good story, but not joe ledger.
