Historia
Hana Babic is a quiet middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared. Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. The events of that day thrust Nura into the war, leading her to join a band of militia fighters.

Really enjoyed this.
Revisado: 03-16-25
I don’t understand why so many are critical of the reader. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the performance. I can imagine this was a hard book to research and write. It conjures up a place and time many of us are not well informed of. I appreciate the craft and care Mr Eskins put into this book. Very different from his other books but i enjoyed it just as much.

Laughed out loud
Revisado: 01-14-25
The advice itself is fine, if not entirely original. But Barry’s way of presenting each story is priceless. I’m willing to overlook a little preachiness here and there for an otherwise delightful read.

I like this series, but not Max in this one
Revisado: 04-29-24
I’ve read four or five books in the series now and have thoroughly enjoyed them. This story I have a hard time swallowing. I’ve not been in Max’s position, so I don’t know what I would do…but it’s hard for me to see how many wrongs are supposed to make a right.

Enjoyed the story, but the reader needs to do her homework on American English.
Revisado: 04-23-24
The story was well paced and kept me interested. As the reader is from Oz, the Aussie accents are great. But being born and raised in Pennsylvania, I cringed every time she tried to do the father’s accent like he was from Tennessee. And it’s pronounced Penn-syl-vane-ya. Not Penn-sul-ven-ee-ah. And don’t get me started on the Poconos. I think she’s quite a talented narrator, but those mistakes feel lazy. A few minutes of research would clear up the pronunciations. I listened to the other book she narrated by Anni and the Americans in that book (ostensibly from TX) sounded exactly the same. Do Aussies just think all Americans sound like they’re from the Deep South?

Historia
An apparent accidental death turns out to be only the first of many murders. Ben Kendall was a troubled man. Coming back from Vietnam with PTSD and scars that no one else could see, he hid away from the world, filling his house with an ever-increasing amount of stuff, until finally the piles collapsed and he was found dead, crushed beneath his own belongings. But what on first glance looks to be the tragic accidental death of a hoarder maybe something much more - and much deadlier

Was Archer distracted?
Revisado: 02-29-24
I’ve read every book up until this one. For me, this story wasn’t one of the author’s better efforts. And he never actually wrote an ending. Everything about this story feels rushed and uninspired. I’ll keep going in the series, but if this were my first I probably wouldn’t come back for more. And is it just me, or is Joe totally cringy around Bev.
