Class of 90
Revisado: 06-15-24
Loved it. It was authentically Army/West Point. I was class of 90 and a chinook pilot. It brought back a flood of memories.

This is my favorite episode in the first three seasons. I reference it often, the mansplaining and investment advice.

Historia
The daughter of hardworking farmers in the heartland, Joni Ernst has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves and get the job done. Raised in rural Iowa, Joni grew up cleaning stalls, hauling grain, and castrating hogs. Farm life forged her work ethic. She developed grit and tenacity, attributes that would later be put to the test when she faced abuse, sexism, and harassment. First, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army and later as an underdog candidate in the US Senate, Joni has proven to be a natural leader who proudly serves her fellow Americans.

Makes me wish I was from Iowa
Revisado: 06-05-20
Senator Ernst is an inspiration! Her story of farm girl, to Army Battalion Commander, to US Senator is an illustration of service, perseverance, and compassion. Her respect and admiration for the people of Iowa shines in every word and action. Farm communities everywhere will hold their heads a little higher after reading this book. Her honesty, humility, and honorable living is refreshing and exactly the kind of servant leadership our county needs right now. Thank you for your service and good luck with your re-election.

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Political Bias
Revisado: 01-16-20
I really liked the first book in this series. The second book showed political bias, but I could overlook it. This third book was even more biased. I just wanted it to end! If I hadn't already spent so much time with the first two I would have quit, and I hate to quit. So alas, I suffered through. Thank goodness for the 2.0x speed option.

Historia
Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

my granddaughter says people are complicated
Revisado: 11-11-18
This book is more similar to A Man Called One than to Beartown. I loved the Grandmother, especially on the day they went to the zoo. Backman has a special ability for slowly unwrapping his characters. They are often quirky, damaged, and delightful. The precocious young girl was a little too mature at times to really be believable. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable book. #Familiesarecomplicated #Moms #Gettoknowpeople #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Historia
In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

Being Timely
Revisado: 11-11-18
This book was ok. I appreciate that the author's premise was fairly original, and I think the time being part is clever. I also liked learning more about Japanese culture. However, her liberal bias seeped through many scenes in the book and distracted from the storytelling. #Liberalbias #Suicide #Noclueaboutthemilitary #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

Historia
In a profound, funny, and beautifully rendered portrait of a beloved companion, bestselling novelist Dean Koontz remembers the golden retriever who changed his life. A retired service dog, Trixie was three when Dean and his wife, Gerda, welcomed her into their home. She was superbly trained, but her greatest gifts couldn’t be taught: her keen intelligence, her innate joy, and an uncanny knack for living in the moment.

Revisado: 04-23-12
Dean Koontz opened my heart even further to the wonderful love of a good dog. His unique, eloquent descriptions of what dogs change inside us was insightful, funny, and moving. I have a CCI release dog too. It is a great organization, training amazing dogs!

Historia
For third-generation Irish-American Sean Corrigan, the past is whatever happened yesterday. Then, on his 21st birthday, his father gives him a musty leather-bound journal that changes his life. Written by his uncle, Michael, a man Sean never even knew existed, it draws Sean into a hunt for the truth. Did Michael, a former NYPD detective, really kill a black civil rights worker? When he fled the United States to hide in Ireland, why was he killed by the British? Who is the beautiful, auburn-haired Kate, and why does Sean feel so strongly that he remembers her?

Layers
Revisado: 03-23-12
Would you consider the audio edition of Until the Next Time to be better than the print version?
Personally, I don't like reading any accents. So the audio version of the Irish accent was the best way to enjoy this book.
What other book might you compare Until the Next Time to and why?
This book reminds me of the Da Vinci Code
What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?
I liked the emotion he kept in the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me laugh. I married into an Irish family. So the observations about the Irish, by an Irishman, made me laugh.
Any additional comments?
This book has many layers and is thoroughly entertaining. It is a great book for a book club because there is a lot to talk about: war, love, spirituality, and politics.
