Likable characters from the beginning which is a must have for me. Several generations intertwine to create a wholesome story where readers can root for everyone to find their happy ending. The narrator absolutely brings the story alive.
Would recommend for an easy feel good listen.

I do like Henry’s books but prefer the written format. The narrator never varies so the audio books run together. Although always 100% predictable, there is a comfort knowing it will all work out. Would like more men doing men lines or alternating readers to break up the monotonous voice that drops an octave at the end of every sentence.

While familiar, the story is brought to life unlike any other previous incarnation or medium. Those familiar with this story of opulence, gluttony, and the immaturity of the youthful mind, can appreciate the portrayal of each character in this classic. Very well done!

I won’t spoil the story so I will start with what I liked. Every character was well thought out. Every complex relationship, functional and dysfunctional are explored. The narration is expertly done.
Now, what I do not understand is the ending. (Stop here if you’re worried about a hint of a spoiler) Why create doubt in the audience when it does nothing to serve the story except to further confuse. Without hinting or spoiling, the end was just well a head scratcher for me.

I did like this story. It’s a little difficult to follow the timelines as they pop in and out without explanation. There is a chapter called Pioneers that could have been avoided as it is too long and doesn’t lend enough to the story. Hints of current day pandering with non binary characters, and stroking the “white boy with a gun who hates homosexuality” narrative alienates a population of readers without lending any merit to the story.
A little clumsy at times but overall a good representation of early game and engine building that led to current day gaming.

Another sweet story. My only complaint is the transition between chapters isn’t tempered well. Lauren’s chapter would end on a solemn note, only to have Samantha’s narrator blast in a too cheerful tone, CHAPTER whatever. More care should be taken to transition between the two narrators with volume and tone control. Otherwise sweet story to add to the series.

Why is there any need to further divide the masses with an us vs them dialog. Really disliked this story.
Act 1 narration was very good. Act 2 sounded like someone with a chip in their shoulder. Wouldn’t recommend

Having loved “A Boys Life” and Towles, I thought the combo would be ideal for me. It does not disappoint. This book is very well written with characters that are very easy to live and root for. Even the villainous are hopelessly misunderstood or victims of their circumstances.
The story follows two brothers who set out to locate their mother in California. The older brother, recently released from a juvenile work home and the younger, a well read, highly intelligent side kick. Characters build and connect throughout. I listened in one day. Gave the performance a 5 but honestly not sure if Ireland was the best choice for Sally. Her parts were so much louder and almost crass which didn’t match the personality of the character. Ballerini is as usual a master at voices. He could have done the Sally parts and the book would have been more enjoyable.
Highly recommend, but maybe better in print.

I’ve read this series twice and cannot believe it took so long to listen to. Wow! Serkis is an amazing narrator. Highly recommend for summer travel and long car rides!

This genre of books are easy to come by but this one stood out. Themes of abuse, manipulation and societal pressure are woven to produce several flawed characters. Each of them is well developed and all become very likable. Eilidh Beaton is a masterful narrator and made this listen much more believable and enjoyable. Just getting to know Beth Moran and will read other titles based on how much this book moved me.
