Russell should, and will, be celebrated as the first author with the courage to treat this subject with the complexity it deserves. Beautifully and thoughtfully done.

The Girls is a profound exploration of trust, ambition, betrayal, and self-discovery. Award-winning journalist Abigail Pesta unveils this deeply reported narrative at a time when the nation is wrestling with the implications of the MeToo movement. How do the women who grew up with Nassar reconcile the monster in the news with the man they once trusted? In The Girls, we learn that their answers to that wrenching question are as rich, insightful, and varied as the human experience itself.

Don’t waste a credit
Revisado: 11-12-19
It is neither a readable true crime story nor any other kind of coherent narrative. It is fragmented; a loosely assembled pile unorganized quotes, opinions, and facts; seriously lacks the objectivity of true investigative reporting—just an opportunistic writer exploiting the tired, low hanging fruit that is the Nassar matter. Many factual errors too.

Historia
In November 2000, Chicago journalist and music critic Jim DeRogatis received an anonymous fax that alleged R. Kelly had a problem with “young girls”. Weeks later, DeRogatis broke the shocking story, publishing allegations that the R&B superstar and local hero had groomed girls, sexually abused them, and paid them off. DeRogatis thought his work would have an impact. Instead, Kelly’s career flourished. No one seemed to care: not the music industry, not the culture at large, not the parents of numerous other young girls. But for more than 18 years, DeRogatis stayed on the story.

Word to author: get a life
Revisado: 06-09-19
The most blaring issues include:
Veiled in self righteous, self congratulatory rhetoric, author is oblivious that what is on display in this piece is his own perverse fixation on RK’s sexual issues (which, at worst, include consensual acts between RK and various women close to the age of legal consent).
True of other books by other authors, it is off-putting when an author exploits some questionably-newsworthy topic (here, RK’s relationships with girls) by using it as a pretext to generate interest and publish what in actuality is an autobiographical piece highlighting his own life or career.

Historia
Ben Mezrich's 2009 best seller, The Accidental Billionaires, is the definitive account of Facebook's founding and the basis for the Academy Award-winning film The Social Network. Two of the story's iconic characters are Harvard students Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss: identical twins, Olympic rowers, and foils to Mark Zuckerberg. Bitcoin Billionaires is the story of the brothers’ redemption and revenge in the wake of their epic legal battle with Facebook.

Mezrich has sold out.
Revisado: 05-24-19
Mezrich used to be fun to read - In high school, my friends and I enjoyed reading about Blackjack. Though not considered to be a serious author, certain of his pieces had a kind of edge, even occasionally ringing subversive.
This one is evidence that any edge or courage is gone from Mezrich’s writing. This book relies on tired rhetorical fillers and melodrama to stretch its limited substantive content. Worse, it reads like a long love letter from Mezrich to the Winkle-whatever boys—a couple Harvard trust fund tools known for receiving a one time windfall gift from Facebook, which Zuck paid to make them go away.
Worst, here Mezrich reveals that he has lost any courage or independence he once had and now just tows the safe, mainstream narrative. He touches very superficially on topics that might give another impression, he carefully dances around and avoids adopting any tone or position that carries risk or that could piss anyone off.
Too bad.

Revisado: 11-21-18
Our major institutions, including those involved in the financial sector, are too far gone. Any hope for them and those who control them is ill founded and irrational. The same is true of our courts and legal system. We have entered a post-constitutional era—these institutions now undermine and mock, rather than preserve, their founding constitutional and democratic functions.
The time has come for ‘the people’ to take action; to stop writing reviews and consuming information via dominant mainstream corporate media outlets. It is time to organize and act.

Historia
Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved novels ever. And yet, very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of 11-year-old Sally Horner. Weaving together suspenseful crime narrative, cultural and social history, and literary investigation, The Real Lolita tells Sally Horner’s full story for the first time. Sarah Weinman uncovers how much Nabokov knew of the Sally Horner case and the efforts he took to disguise that knowledge during the process of writing and publishing Lolita.

10 chapters in, the author finally admits that she was never able to find out much about what happened to the girl. I wish I’d known that before buying the book. So, the result is hours and hours of talk on topics she was able to find out about. Half way in I had to call it quits.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jim Rogers again?
No
What three words best describe Michael Bybee’s voice?
Ordinary
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Dissapointment; No substantive investment advice, or anything substantive really. Just another eccentric wealthy hedge fund manager wanting to romanticize his luck and brag about his adventures.

By day he made thousands of dollars a minute. By night he spent it as fast as he could. From the binge that sank a 170-foot motor yacht and ran up a $700,000 hotel tab, to the wife and kids waiting at home and the fast-talking, hard-partying young stockbrokers who called him king, here, in Jordan Belfort's own words, is the story of the ill-fated genius they called the Wolf of Wall Street.
