Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Santino’s usually awesome…
Revisado: 04-09-25
…but I disliked his Lucy Gray, and the spoken lyrics were especially painful—sing-songy and weird, with this horrible nasal tone. The book’s still worth a listen, but Santino’s performance took away from the story, imo. Might be a better read than listen.

Loved this—highly recommend
Revisado: 02-08-25
Hard to identify something about this book that I didn’t like. It was beautifully written, the story was fantastic (you may need Kleenex at its conclusion), and the character development was spot on.

Unlikeable main characters
Revisado: 02-02-25
This story was…just okay. Very “Misery,” and it kinda dragged on. Most disappointing, though, were the unbelievable choices of all three main characters. Tegan, in particular, was spectacularly stupid. The reader did well generally, given the material she had to work with, though her accent grated on my nerves—and the saccharine unborn baby voice was cringe-inducing. I guess the reader did her best with that, too. Imo, this isn’t one of McFadden’s best. I wish I’d given up on it and retuned it.

Historia
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College – Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is – unless she betrays the man she loves.

Great story—but ridiculous, distracting music
Revisado: 01-25-25
I can’t seem to stop listening to these books—super fun story—but who chose the music for this full-cast performance? Yikes. The background music in the early sex scene was just plain awful. That, plus the over-the-top sex noises, plus the occasional hammy bit-part actor’s delivery ALMOST made me exchange this installment for the other version, with just the voice acting.

Warning: animal abuse
Revisado: 01-20-25
I was loving this author and his books until this one was ruined, at least for me, by gratuitous animal abuse. If you don’t like reading about pets getting killed, give this a pass (and perhaps this author in general).

Historia
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to Wellwood House in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, to give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened. Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them.

Didn’t expect to get choked up at the end…
Revisado: 01-19-25
…but I did. Enjoyed the story and the character development. Thought the voice acting was impressive. Most impressive, maybe, is that this book that delves deeply into what motherhood feels like was written by a man. Then again, I’m not a mother myself, so I may not be the best judge. :) Regardless, I recommend. I found this read exciting, just the right amount of witchy, historically interesting, thought-provoking, and touching.

A prophecy foretold of a journey across the seas that would solve all my problems. But now I'm stuck between an old flame who wants to rekindle what we had, and a jealous vampire who would take the other's head if permitted. Did I mention the psycho goddess Lilis, stalking our every move, intent on killing us all? What fun! But—sheesh—the errors…
Revisado: 12-21-24
I delight in Shannon Mayer’s creative storytelling. And Tillie’s narration is always fantastic—excellent reader. The male actor demonstrated impressive range in this recording, making multiple characters both distinct and consistent. But he mispronounced several words—like “marrow” (“mah-row??”)—and the actors can’t seem to decide how to pronounce the name “Hamish” in this series. It’s “Hay, not “Hah,” but even if you want to use the weird pronunciation, just stick with it, for the love of Pete!! I found those moments pretty cringe-worthy. I cringed several other times when I noticed the many grammatical errors peppered throughout. I can’t imagine that a proofreader had their way with this book before it was published. Does this review make me a cranky nit-picker? Maybe. Will I keep reading and enjoying the series? Yup, probably. But if you’re sensitive to mispronunciation and incorrect word use or tense use—if you find errors distracting when reading a story—this series will likely drive you bananas. You have been warned.

Great performance, didn’t love the story
Revisado: 10-27-24
I’m not usually hung up on whether a story’s realistic vs. a bit far-fetched, but something about this one just seemed…over the top. Just couldn’t buy it. Wish I hadn’t literally bought it. Performance was great, though.

Got about halfway through and had to stop. I had difficulty relating to Susan, and perhaps that was why I had trouble getting into this. Yuck, and no thanks.
