Don’t care for the plot
Revisado: 12-23-24
I don’t care for detective stories where the detective or family is the victim or suspect. This series is basically both.

Historia
Recently divorced and reluctantly retired, Julia Bird has fled London to enjoy idyllic rural life in the Cotswolds. Determined to have the perfect English garden, her first job is to tear down the old shed, where she unearths much more than she’d bargained for: a body, apparently buried for decades. But who could it be, and who killed them? The police draw a blank, and even the gossip-fest that is the local book club can’t remember anyone going missing in the village.

“There’s only one explanation”
Revisado: 11-04-24
This is a pleasant murder mystery. I imagine the author may improve over time. But, in this first book, at each clue, the heroine says “There’s only one explanation”. It gets tiresome. I recommend reading the Daisy Dalrymple and Lady Hardcastle series first.

Problems with the storyline
Revisado: 03-11-24
A decent story and well told. However, the plot relies on a cringe-worthy assumption Bess makes at the start of the story that you know is incorrect. It comes up over and over and you just have to press on.

Historia
Froome, Wiggins, Merckx - we know the winners of the Tour de France, but Lanterne Rouge tells the forgotten, often inspirational, and occasionally absurd stories of the last-placed rider. We learn of stage winners and former yellow jerseys who tasted life at the other end of the bunch, the breakaway leader who stopped for a bottle of wine and then took a wrong turn, the doper whose drug cocktail accidentally slowed him down, and the rider who was recognized as the most combative despite finishing at the back.

An authoritative and deeply personal narrative history of the State of Israel, by one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today. Not since Thomas L. Sparked many investigations
Revisado: 01-08-12
This book captured life in Paris as viewed by the many Americans who went there to learn. I frequently found myself searching the web for images and works of many of these people. I certainly will appreciate the artwork of many of the American artists more, having read about their lives and their art.

Historia
"What should we have for dinner?" To one degree or another, this simple question assails any creature faced with a wide choice of things to eat. Anthropologists call it the omnivore's dilemma. Choosing from among the countless potential foods nature offers, humans have had to learn what is safe, and what isn't. Today, as America confronts what can only be described as a national eating disorder, the omnivore's dilemma has returned with an atavistic vengeance.

Too obvious
Revisado: 08-20-08
The story was somewhat engaging and I enjoyed most of the characters. However, as usual, I picked the likely candidate for the mystery very early. Unusually (for me anyway), each step merely reinforced my guess. If you find Agatha Christy too predictable, you won't like this at all.
The narration was good.
