I hated the way this was delivered. The background music was so distracting that I finally gave up.

The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

Very interesting story about how humans react to knowledge of life and what they do with that knowledge. I would have liked more details or storyline for the Rollins family.

Remarkable page turner
Revisado: 04-22-24
As a child born from an Army veteran of the Vietnam war and a Vietnamese mother who met her true love while working on post I always wondered about that time period. This book really provides such details about the sites, smells, and feelings evoked by those who were there. Hearing the authors credits at the end also helped to validate the content and experiences shared in the book. While it was a historical fiction, it gave me insight into how women were regarded during that time period. There are no winners in war. As I listened to the story and look back at history I just can’t wrap my head around why Americans were so cruel to those returning from war. So many were drafted and yet they too were treated at traitors.
We continue to blindly take sides in times of conflict and forget there are no winners. Just victims caught in the crossfire.

Historia
In a powerful and gripping debut, Rachel Aviv raises fundamental questions about how we understand ourselves in periods of crisis and distress. Drawing on deep, original reporting as well as unpublished journals and memoirs, Aviv writes about people who have come up against the limits of psychiatric explanations for who they are. Animated by a profound sense of empathy, Aviv’s exploration is refracted through her own account of living in a hospital ward at the age of six and meeting a fellow patient with whom her life runs parallel—until it no longer does.

Horrible just horrible.
Revisado: 03-06-23
This was such a terrible book, I couldn't get past the first story. Why not just call out the prior medical community for what it was??? So much treatment and care was through trial and error vs. science. Why site so much and so much was bad in our history. The time period when giving patients lithium was ok and giving people a lipotomy was too.

Lovely story
Revisado: 08-24-21
This story had a nice flow to it and was different than other books I have read. Most have someone who has been treated badly and overcome some sort of hardship. This one showed a side of people dedicated to their country, being honorable, yet still able to positively overcome loss in their own way. It showed how people grow and come into themselves. Strong women as always are in her books and that is wonderful.

Not for me
Revisado: 08-22-21
I enjoyed the beginning of this book through about 2/3. Then it just got blah. I hated the ending and it just didn't flow. So unlike other books written by Jodi Picoult. Something was just missing and the ending could have been so much better.

Historia
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.
