Historia
It is the summer of 1969 and Rome is awash with glamour and intrigue: the stars of Cinecittà are drinking and dancing along the paparazzo-lined Via Veneto, where royalty, American expats, and the occasional Russian spy rub shoulders. Teddy Huntley Carlyle has just arrived in Italy from Dallas, Texas, eager for a fresh start with her new husband, a diplomat assigned to the American embassy. After years of “spoiling like old milk,” in the words of her controlling, politically minded uncle, Teddy vows to turn over a new leaf.

Good narrator, annoying main character
Revisado: 09-19-24
The book had so much potential but I found listening to hour after hour of bad choices and self inflicted misery tedious. I know that Teddy is meant to portray a woman who is a product of her time and situation but she is very unlikeable. It was hard to feel any sympathy for her and I disliked her destructive behaviour. Or maybe I was just missing the point.

Could have been interesting
Revisado: 10-07-22
The story is slow and pretty boring which is a pity as the setting could been used so much more effectively

Historia

Another great Deon Meyer novel
Revisado: 04-06-15
Where does Ikarus rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Deon Meyer never disappoints. As I was too impatient to wait for the English translation I listened to Ikarus in Afrikaans. The narrator is excellent and makes the listeners feel like they are part of the story. Every Deon Meyer story I have listened to or read has always ranked as one of my favorites, Ikarus lived up to my expectations.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
It kept me thinking who the culprit was and I was pleasantly surprised at the unexpected twist at the end.
What about Nic de Jager’s performance did you like?
He switches effortlessly from English to Afrikaans and back throughout the story and makes me long to be in the Cape. His accent is perfect for the story and I enjoyed listening to him as much as I enjoyed the story
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did, but work, family and pets didn't permit that. For once I didn't mind my lengthy daily commute between my town and work though:)
Any additional comments?
I am almost sad that I didn't wait for the English version as the wait for the next Deon Meyer novel will be long, had I waited for the English translation I would still have the novel to look forward to.
