Only the Accountants and Lawyers ....

Only the Accountants and Lawyers for the commercial parties involved will think this new audio recording is even close to the same level of presentation as the previous version with Stephen Briggs.

I chose Hogfather for my first purchase of the new spate of 'revised' performances in this genre because there are at least two good performances of the book, one by Stephen Briggs and by the cast of the video special.

If this performance managed to produce a more believable portrayal of the female characters while still broadly maintaining the prior quality of male characterization. I would have considered this new offering as a fitting update.

I have always cringed at some of the voice acting by male performers of other Pratchett offerings for female characters. I have endured very annoying conceits in female performances of books from the Witches Cycle of Pratchett books, also considering the especially poor insertion of brief male actors needed to voice Death. I have endured the latter of those issues BECAUSE I could not imagine why a male performer could be anything but far more annoying. But, with 3 talented people getting somewhat equal billing I'd have thought there would be an actually acceptable way to apportion the reading of the overall book to make better use for the large cast of characters.

This offering is just plain PEDESTRIAN. The voice acting by the main reader is just 'maling it in', There is none of the nuance that gives the previous recording and the TV offering it's wit and charm. The performances by the two 'supporting' readers are FAR out-done by the Stephen Briggs version where he does all the parts. Taken all together, Stephen Briggs doing all three jobs, even with the handicap of having to try and present female characters in dialog, is head and shoulders above the presenters in the 'new' version. I am so disappointed in both the lack of substance in this presentation and the wasted, rich resources.

HOWEVER, it is as if the Accountants and Lawyers were the final Creative Directors in this production, with the overall performance no where near that of the others, even with ALLEGEDLY far superior resources.

As this is obviously the level of performance to be expected in other 'updated' releases, I will not be purchasing any more except for books that have not yet been released by Audible ..., MAYBE ..., if I have no choice but losing a performance as previous versions are erased without appeal ...

Bought this title a while ago as an UNABRIDGED performance read by Nigel Planer, who, with Steven Briggs, form the backbone of my Audible Pratchett collection.

Now, for some reason, a completely MISERABLE performance of an ABRIDGED edition read by Tony Robinson has been substituted with no warning or explanation.

The story suffers from the lack of detail, which is always important in a Pratchett book, especially one that involves a murder mystery, and Robinson has all the stage presence of a feckless teenager and all the voice acting nuance of a stale loaf of store-brand, nutrition-free white bread.

Be warned, if you own older versions, that this one is NOT what it claims for narrator, NOR is it from another customary Pratchett narrator, NOR is it unabridged or done in the voice actor style of all the OTHER Pratchett books of this type.

For SHAME, Audible and Amazon, if this is not just some unfortunate glitch, but is an actual conscious decision to neuter a formerly very enjoyable Pratchett title.

I REALLY hope the Planer UNABRIDGED version returns, and cannot recommend this title without those changes, or even a Steven Briggs UNABRIDGED alternative.

Can't Match Prime for Characterizations

If only someone could wrap the book up in the cast from the Amazon Prime TV series, and add the extra bit at the end of the series.

Neither this narrator nor the separate Dramatization production actors produce the same finish as the TV production.

Still a good read and a good TV series, but this one-person show just is not up to the same level, and it gets annoying at times as the TV director seems to have caught most of the characterizations far more pleasing to my tastes (e.g., the actual Aziraphale and Crowley voices are far more fitting in the series than on voice actor could have ever provided, and the child Adam's voice can only be described as so posh it rises to the level of eminently punch-able in the face). There are similar issues with the Hogfather and Going Postal works, too, so if you've compared them you know what you're getting here.

I'm still glad I purchased this version because it's a good listen on road trips where just the audio from the TV production wouldn't cut it.

Would you listen to Cabin Pressure: The Complete Series 3 again? Why?

Yes, but not soon; not as crisp, but that's what happens.

What did you like best about this story?

Still a great ensemble who make it shine.

Any additional comments?

Arthur is too I Love Lucy stoopid and unbelievable seeing as it is John Finnemore who plays him. His role in Elvenquest is far more rounded, even as the Dog/Chosen One.
