Historia
Mary Lennox starts her life as an unhappy victim of circumstance. After the loss of her parents, she moves to rural Yorkshire to live with a distant uncle where she resents the wildness of the countryside. At first, she struggles to find a place in this new existence. Although unsure about her surroundings and its occupants, through the gentle guidance of the maid she gradually becomes interested in the story of Mrs Craven, who apparently used to spend her time in a garden at the house, the key to which has vanished.

STILL a Lovely story
Revisado: 12-20-24
A wonderful children’s story of the power of nature and laughter in restoring health to two young, abandoned children. Excellent narration brings the listener to the Yorkshire of old. My daughter loved it at 7 and again at 9.

Historia
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Mature, patient Dickens
Revisado: 04-23-24
Off with a very slow start but finally finds it’s pace and we can again enjoy a good story with villians and heroines. Dickens seems to grow more romantic as he ages and more kind to his female characters. Unfortunately the narrator was not great with the female voices.

Historia
This Audible Exclusive production revisits Charles Dickens’ tragi-comic novel Little Dorrit. Written during the Crimean War, it a story of fortunes won and lost and a masterly portrayal of the failings of Victorian Society, with the ever-present spectre of law enforcement and imprisonment looming over a fearful population. Divided into two parts, Book One: Poverty and Book Two: Riches, Little Dorrit satirises the debtors prisons and the detrimental effect of enforcing a British class system.

Some classics should be abandoned
Revisado: 03-24-23
This fictional tale of a family living on an island with every animal from penguins to jackals to porcupines to coconut throwing monkeys is told by an insipid father with the paternalistic vision of a conquistador. Within the first few chapters of this story they have gratuitously murdered most every animal they have encountered , insulted “savages” and women, and exemplified brutal and unquestioning white male domination . It was a sickening account and should be lost to the history except as a reflection of how primitive and cruel early settlers treated the land and lives they encountered.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Historia
Austen wrote, 'I am going to take a heroine whom no-one but myself will much like' and thus introduces the handsome, clever, rich - and flawed, Emma Woodhouse. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.

Dramatized version
Revisado: 03-24-23
This was the first dramatized version of a book I have listened too and it seemed to have been very well acted. It is definitely another step removed from the original experience of reading and you cannot be sure what exactly the author wrote. Entertaining but not for purists!
