Historia
Here is the behind-the-scenes story of how the United States forged its wartime alliance with Britain, told from the perspective of three key American players in London: Edward R. Murrow, Averell Harriman, and John Gilbert Winant. Drawing from a variety of primary sources, Olson skillfully depicts the dramatic personal journeys of these men who, determined to save Britain from Hitler, helped convince a cautious Franklin Roosevelt and a reluctant American public to support the British at a critical time.

Wonderful nuanced story
Revisado: 01-21-23
The war on the ground in London was a lot more nuanced, and (evidently) a whole lot more lascivious, then I had ever imagined. I’ve read many stories that tell the arc of World War II in far more simplistic terms. Here, by contrast, aspects of the war such as growing tensions between the United States and Britain and horrifying maltreatment of black US soldiers in England (by Americans, not by the English) are laid out in fascinating detail.

Historia
Quantum theory is weird. As Niels Bohr said, if you aren’t shocked by quantum theory, you don’t really understand it. For most people, quantum theory is synonymous with mysterious, impenetrable science. And in fact for many years it was equally baffling for scientists themselves. In this tour de force of science history, Manjit Kumar gives a dramatic and superbly written account of this fundamental scientific revolution.

Very good. A few niggling mispronunciations
Revisado: 08-26-22
Review of 20th century quantum theory. I only wish that the reader had figured out the difference between “v” and the Greek “nu”. But this is a quibble.

Historia
Finnegans Wake is the greatest challenge in 20th-century literature. Who is Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker? And what did he get up to in Phoenix Park? And what did Anna Livia Plurabelle have to say about it? In the rich nighttime and the language of dreams, here are history, anecdote, myth, folk tale and, above all, a wondrous sense of humor, colored by a clear sense of humanity. In this exceptional reading by the Irish actor Barry McGovern, with Marcella Riordan, the world of the Wake is more accessible than ever before.

An excellent reading of a difficult text
Revisado: 07-10-22
No one should pick up Finnegans Wake expecting an ordinary story. Look well before setting sail on this work. But if you have decided to read it, this audio rendition will be an outstanding help. (For one chapter, Shem the Penman, I am partial to the reading by Cyril Cusack, also available on Audible. But delightful as that recording is, it is of a heavily abridged text. This recording is unabridged. A monumental achievement.)

Historia
Rousseau was one of the key figures of the Enlightenment, a period in history when all aspects of politics and human rights underwent dramatic reinterpretation. His discourse on inequality is one of his earliest works, an examination of the state of nature of mankind and the way in which current society fell short of both its ideals and its potential. Rousseau was the most influential French writer of his age. His works gave rise to the ideals espoused during the French Revolution, and in no small part contributed to the American Revolution as well.

Explosive text
Revisado: 10-24-19
An astonishing work, as relevant now as in the eighteenth century. Rousseau may have been an awful human being (there is good reason to think so) but he’s a devastating writer. No one will think about humanity in the same way after reading this book. The performance is not exciting, but the text provides enough excitement.

Historia
In September 1960, John Steinbeck and his poodle, Charley, embarked on a journey across America, from small towns to growing cities to glorious wilderness oases. Travels with Charley is animated by Steinbeck’s attention to the specific details of the natural world and his sense of how the lives of people are intimately connected to the rhythms of nature—to weather, geography, the cycles of the seasons. His keen ear for the transactions among people is evident, too, as he records the interests and obsessions that preoccupy the Americans he encounters along the way.

Became more fun as it went
Revisado: 10-11-18
At the beginning, he spent a lot of time talking about himself. The book became more fun when Steinbeck began talking about other people and experiences. His description of the South was moving and depressing at the same time.

Historia
At once a powerful evocation of his early life in Harlem and a disturbing examination of the consequences of racial injustice to both the individual and the body politic, James Baldwin galvanized the nation in the early days of the civil rights movement with this eloquent manifesto. The Fire Next Time stands as one of the essential works of our literature.

Important message powerfully spoken
Revisado: 06-01-18
From 1962 comes an essay that speaks still (sad to say) in 2018. Baldwin’s religious experience is of a God neither black nor white, but one that is not oblivious to the terrible consequences of racial history in the USA.
